Lana standing in the hall, heard what Ren said and gasped. At the sound Ren turned and looked at Lana.
"Who is she to you?"
Lana looked down at her shoes and answered "no one,I mean I don't know her I think I hit her with my car."
Ren motioned towards the waiting room and Lana followed. They sat down and he pulled out a notepad.
"Tell me what happened."
Lana went through the whole thing again and by the third time she was tired of talking.
"Sheriff I already told your Deputy and now I've told you. I don't know anything more. I was driving she,ran out of the woods with a wolf chasing her. I felt a thump and hit the brakes then called 911. I told them dog because I don't know any of you yet."
Ren took down her name and address and told her not to discuss this with anyone. He then told his deputy, Finch Taylor to follow her home to make sure she got there safe.
Lana wide eyed told the sheriff I don't need an escort I'm fine really, but when he raised his brow and leveled her with a look she knew there was no use in arguing.
Nine hours later Dr. Stivers walked into the small waiting room and woke Ren.
"Come on sheriff, she is in recovery."
They walked into the room where the petite girl lay still as death with wires and tubes running all through and over her.
"Tell me Doc" Ren said.
Dr. Stivers stuck his hands in the pockets of his white lab coat and sighed.
" I am going to guess she is between sixteen to 20 years old. She has a small concussion, three broken ribs, her femur is almost shattered, her wrist was dislocated and three broken fingers. All on the left side. But that's not the worst part."
Ren looked at him and asked "how the hell can it get any worse?"
Dr. Stivers motioned Sarah the nurse over to the bed. Sarah pulled the sheet down and lifted the gown. Across her torso and legs were long thin marks, some old some new. Sarah pulled the gown down and half rolled the girl on her side and Ren sucked in a hissing breath. Her back from the neck to her toes were covered in the same marks some still raw and bleeding. Across the lower part of her back were large circular burns. Ren clinched his hands in a fist and turned to walk out but stopped. Without turning he asked the Dr. " the left you said?"
Dr. Stivers answered " yes. Was that where the car hit her?"
"No doc. The car hit her on the right."
Dr. Stivers shook his head. "Damn that can only mean one thing."
" Ya it means she was curled with her right side down while her attacker beat the exposed side." He walked out after that clenching and unclenching his fist.
