Jenna sat on the couch facing Bailey and waited for her to speak. Bailey looked thoughtful for a moment then said
"ya know what? You ask first."
Jenna jumped right in.
"Explain the mate bond, how it works, and how it affects us."
"Holy shit Jenna dive right in."
Jenna looked a little sheepish and Bailey felt bad.
"I was kidding Jenna."
Bailey wiggled a bit and settled in .
"Ok this is gonna be a pretty long speech, and since I haven't found my mate yet I can only tell you what my mom told me. I can't tell you how it feels but I can tell you how it works. Girls will not recognize their mate until they turn 18.
Something about their minds and bodies reaching the same level of sexual maturity.Males however have been known to recognize their mates as early as 16 because you know that pesky procreation thing. But they won't feel the over powering need until they turn 18 or so.The reason is supposedly so their bodies and minds can prepare them to defend their mates. Males being more dominant of the animal species.
Now just because you recognize your mate does not mean your going to fall head over heels in love and live happily ever after. We do still have human DNA and the ability to think for ourselves.
Mom said finding your mate means you have found the person you are sexually compatible with. The best person to continue the species with. So as a female your mate will make you feel safe, can calm you, provide for you and make you want to have babies at the first possible chance. That's your wolf DNA kicking in.
For the males he will want to claim you, mate you, provide you with pups, protect you and provide for you. He will feel very possessive and stronger because of you. That's his wolfs DNA. I call it lust at first sight.
Now luckily for us we still have that pesky human DNA that allows us to make choices. We will want to throttle them and cuddle with them and maybe even respect them but we get to choose to be with them. We can take our time to fall in love with them or not. I know of one mated pair that outside of the bedroom can't stand to be near each other.
We may heal faster, see better, live longer,be stronger and change into an animal, but we can still reason and eat with a fork and understand right from wrong.
That animal in you can't talk to you. It's not your conscience. It's not a separate being. It is you. It's an extra bit of DNA. It's what makes us not better, but a step above the animals and the humans.
Now my turn.Jenna how come you didn't know any of this?"
Jenna debated how much to tell Bailey and decided to tell her just enough to ease her curiosity but keep her safe.
"The place where we were kept, there was no one there to teach us. The only one there like us, taught us the basics and that's it. The lessons we learned were not those kinds of lessons."
The girls had their guards down so they didn't hear when Ren entered the room. So when Ren spoke they both jumped.
"Jenna you said us. Do you mean your brothers?"
Jenna looked down and refused to answer.
"Damn it Jenna give me something here. Are you protecting your brothers? Where were you kept? Who was keeping you prisoner?
Jenna just sat there and Ren sighed. His voice was harsh when he spoke again.
"I can't help you Jenna if you don't talk to me."
"I don't need your help Sheriff Holmes. You don't know me or what I am capable of. Don't mistake meekness for weakness."
With that statement Ren nodded and walked upstairs.
"Wow Jenna that was harsh." He just wants to keep you safe."
"I know Bailey but who will keep him safe?
I can't be responsible for anyone else."
Jenna got up from the couch and walked into the guest room Ren had given her to use. She closed the door and whispered a silent prayer.
"God please keep Them safe until I can get to them."
