I stood awkwardly as Maddie walked into school. I stood where we usually waited for each other, right by the front door. It was Monday morning, and later today the cameramen and producers would be at the studio, filming for Dance Moms. I suddenly wished Kalani came to Maddie, Kenzie, and I's high school, since she's the only other girl who knows about besides Maddie and Kenzie. But she and Jojo go to the public school, while Maddie, Kenzie, Nia, and I go to a smaller private school.
"Hi," Maddie said as she walked up to me.
"Hey," I replied. There was an awkward silence. Then, of all people, Nick walked in. Maddie started freaking out.
"I, uh, I gotta go, I really need to go, I gotta go," Maddie said, and quickly walked away.
I expected Nick to chase after her, but instead he walked up to me. My crush on him hadn't completely dissolved, but now I knew we could never have a chance with him. Not that I ever did have a chance with him, but now not even Maddie is allowed to see him.
"Hey," Nick said when he walked up to me. "Where'd Maddie go?"
I took a deep breath. I had to tell him. "Nick, she...isn't feeling well," I lied.
"Oh," he replied.
"Ugh, I can't lie," I said. "Melissa knows about you and Maddie's...um, 'sleepover'."
Nick's calm, confident expression dropped.
When he didn't say anything, I said the worst part: "And Abby knows."
"ABBY KNOWS??" Now he had a reply. I sighed.
"I gotta go," I said quickly, and walked away, leaving Nick speechless.
