Straightening Things Out

Cubbie brought me to wherever the guys were. Andy was pressing an icepack against his knuckles while AJ on his jaw. They were sitting across each other as Mark, Pontius, Sean, and Isom surrounded them. It kind of look like a political debate was going on. As I come closer, I noticed that both of them had tearstained cheeks. This made me even more confused and I still don’t have a clue on what’s going on. I was kind of neglecting it anyways. I glanced at AJ and he looked back with a microscopic smile. I glanced at Andy and he gave me an apologetic one. “Well, one of you should start saying something.” Mark broke the awkward silence, “Because we have no clue on what just happened.”

“I was begging on my knees for dad to take me back home.” AJ started,  “I didn’t know why I was given away then, but I now understand.”

“Why? Because you can’t take the pressure?” Andy satirically said,

“You were too young to remember that we had a family crisis. We were broke, sport.”

“Don’t sport me! DNA might tell you that I’m your brother, but I’m not! I’m not your brother!”

I knew that AJ wanted to hit him in the face, but that didn’t happen. He took a deep breath and went on, “With Ally just born and you starting elementary… It was a really tough time. I left a few weeks after she was born. I realized that it was for your and Ally’s sake.”

And then it hit me, “Was that why dad was so freaked out when he lost that job?”

“Dad lost his job again?” AJ butted in,

            “Shut up!” Andy snarled,

“Andy! Was that why he was so freaked out?” I asked again,

Andy flinched and rubbed his forehead, “Shit. Honestly, yes.”

“He’s afraid to lose one of you. He’s afraid that it’s going to happen again.” AJ stated,

“But we managed to get back up to our feet. Why didn’t you come home by then?” His voice dripped of poison but also sadness at the same time, “I’ve been waiting for you to come home, but you never did.”

AJ swallowed, “Because I had problems on my own.”

Andy snapped. He stood up and was about to lunge at AJ but Mark and Pontius pulled him back, “You got him already!” Pontius scolded, “Just sit down and talk!”

“Problems? What problems? You were too scared to face your parents after disappearing? What kind of a bastard are you? You were afraid to see Ally, who has no clue that you exist? Who has no clue that you’re her big brother?”

“Look, I’m sorry…” AJ sighed shakily,

“Dad went looking all over for you and mom cried herself to sleep every single night! Did you know that? I had to witness that at the age of six! You tore my family into bits!” Notice how Andy said ‘my’ instead of ‘our’? It’s going to take some time for them to get along. Andy was at rage. This tore me into pieces. I felt sorry for both of them, especially Andy. Not only the fact that he had to be a parent for me at the age of sixteen, but also the fact that he should have had someone else to back him up.

“You don’t know what I have to face every single day!” AJ cried back, “You still have dad!”

“I told you already! Dad’s dead! He’s dead and there’s no way he’s ever going to come back!”
