So Andy, AJ, and I are standing frozen on the front door. Things have cooled down a little. None of us has the guts to unlock the door. None of us dared to say a word after the guys left. I think Andy was still spooked out by this. I could feel AJ’s heart beating out of pace. Then I made the first move. My hand reached for the doorknob and it was surprisingly unlocked. So I peeked in and found mom with her back against us. I snuck back out again and gulped, “She’s in there alright.”
Andy sighed, “Fine, I’ll go in.” So he did. He bravely stepped inside the house. “Hi, mom.” He greeted,
“You’re home pretty late. Where’s your sister?”
“She’s outside.”
“How did it go?”
It took a while for Andy to answer this, “It was acceptingly great.”
“Why isn’t she coming in?”
That took another while for Andy to answer. I can picture him freaking out on the inside. “We bumped into someone today.” He finally said and my heart started racing,
“Who?”
“He’s outside with Ally.”
“Sweetie, what’s going on?”
“Honestly, I don’t know.” And that has triggered mom’s panic mode,
“Where’s your sister?” She asked again, “And who’s the guy you bumped into? Don’t do this again.” That’s the last thing I’ve heard. Then the door was slowly pushed open and I just stood frozen. Mom froze too. Everyone was frozen like time was paused. My breath caught in my throat and I just don’t know what to do.
“M-mom?” AJ whimpered. I understood how he felt. How his adrenaline was rushing throughout his whole body. How he was feeling happy but anxious at the same time. How everything’s being put back together slowly.
It took a while for mom to study him. She gave him a look of confusion. She was staring at him like he was a ghost. I just stood there in confusion and watched those two. I kept convincing myself that she’d remember him. Even though they haven’t seen each other for more than two decades, I still have faith in mom. After about five minutes of intense staring contest, it finally happened. “A-Anthony?” Seriously, how many names does this guy have? I think mom was too astonished to notice the bruise in AJ’s jaw, but now is not the time to tell her about that.
AJ pursed his lips and I could smell tears. He nodded, “I’m home, mom. I’m home.”
“My boy!” Mom practically flung herself onto his chest, “Oh my God. Thank God you’re home. Oh, sweetie, where have you been?” She said between sobs,
“I’m sorry.” So both of them were crying, “I’m so sorry.”
“My baby.” She mumbled onto his chest, “You’re back.”
He nodded on her shoulder, “I’m back.”
“I’ve been looking all over for you.”
“I know, and I’m sorry. Please forgive me, mom.” He blamed himself for leaving,
“Where were you? You got me so worried.”
