My eyes flew open. I shifted in bed to read the time on the clock; 4:15. I had been laying awake in bed since midnight, and when I finally fell asleep - I was up again. My stomach growled uncomfortably and I bit my lip, embarrassed if everyone heard it.
I decided to get some food, then. Its not like anyone was awake anyways. It took a lot to get my lazy ass out of bed. I threw the warm covers off, first. Then, I struggled to sit up before finally standing up. I trudged to the door like an energetic trooper, unfortunately.
I shut the door softly behind me and tip toed down the stairs. The kitchen light was off. I was acutely aware that I was wearing a baggy grey shirt and plaid pj shorts, which were pretty flowy so they kept the air circulating in the boiling heat.
There was an entire grocery store inside the fridge, but I scoured every shelf and only ended up plucking out the box of strawberries and rummaged through the cupboard for some Nutella. I placed it on the island and took a seat, not really caring that I was about to have a midnight snack in a pitch black kitchen.
Just as I was about to pop the berry in my mouth, I heard a sound that made me freeze what I was doing. My eyes widened by a fraction and I remained silent as fuck. There was a shifting sound and then - someone wrapped their hands on my mouth and whispered: "Boo."
I couldn't scream, so I gasped. But then I recognized the voice, and my next reaction was to elbow him and toss my strawberry at his face. "You fucker!" I harshly whispered back, scrunching my eyebrows together in anger. "You scared me!"
With his arms wrapped around me, I felt him vibrate and convulse with laughter. He let me go and the lights flickered on dimly. His face was flushed with laughter and I crossed my arms. "Char - Char - your face -"
"Ha ha, good one." I muttered, deadpanned.
He took a seat opposite me, "Sorry..." But his grin said otherwise.
Choosing not to reply, I picked up another strawberry, dipped it into Nutella, and bit into it. "What are you doing awake anyways?" I mumbled with a mouthful.
He shrugged, "Just heard someone come down here..."
I pursed my lips and leaned over the island, pushing the box of strawberries to him. "Thanks," he said as he ate one. "You should try this with peanut butter, its delicious."
My face scrunched up in disgust. "You're gross."
"No! Try it!" He leaped off the stool to get the jar of peanut butter when he stopped halfway. His eyes narrowed and he scrutinized me.
I frowned, "What?" I asked worriedly.
"Your face..." He began slowly. "Its bruised..."
My eyes widened and I slapped my cheek with my hand harder than intended and winced in pain. "Ouch, shit!" I groaned. He sighed and walked past me to the freezer. In a few seconds, I felt something cool press against my bruised face.
"Thanks," I mumbled, leaning in closer to the bag of frozen peas. He let me hold the bag as he went back and sat down across from me, the peanut butter long forgotten.
He sighed deeply and I raised a brow at him in question. "I just don't understand how you put up with that." Concern flashed in his eyes and I knew he was genuinely worried.
I shrugged. "You learn." He opened his mouth to protest and then came up short for words. A silence overtook us and it was oddly comfortable. A thought struck me, then. "Hey, isn't your birthday like... Next week?"
His eyebrows shot up. "You remember?"
"Of course I do, what kind of question is that?" I asked snappily.
