EIGHTEEN
I wasn’t a stupid girl; I don’t think I have ever been. Unless you counted my abusive mother – that was a different story –I was strong, independent and most importantly, I was smart. Street smart, of course. I wasn’t quite sure how book smart I was since my life revolved around the artistic side of the world (which people often said was more ‘easy’ to flow with).
But when I was put in a tight situation, I always stepped back to think for a few minutes before making hasty decisions. So while I watched William smirk his ugly smirk at me through the windows, I took a deep breath in and contemplated on what I should do. He had Noah. I didn’t care that she was Jason’s sister because in that moment – along with all the others – she was my sister, too. I briefly wondered how Will would get his hands on Noah, I mean, wasn’t Emily watching over her?
And then I remembered that today was a weekday, and Noah had ballet from 4:30 to 5:30. Fear pumped through my veins as the reality of the situation came crashing down on me. If William was here… where was Noah? What if he locked her up somewhere? Or hurt her?
Before an entire series of doubts filled my mind, I needed to come up with a solution. I hastily unlocked my phone and redialed Will. “Are you ready to come back?”
Our gazes met and my heart squeezed in my chest. I didn’t want to go back to Will – not when I had Jason. Not after last night.
“Yes.” But Noah needed me, and I needed Noah safe.
A satisfied grin played on his lips. “Fantastic choice, my sweet Charlotte.”
I cleared my throat to cut him off. “Where do I meet you?”
Glancing at his watch, he replied. “I’ll text you the address. You have till 6:30 to get there, or else Noah’s done.” The sudden coldness in his voice told me that he wasn’t fucking around with me.
“What?” I frowned. “That’s not enough time – I – I can’t –“
“Leave work. Get there – or else. Oh, and, don’t think about telling anyone. I’m watching you.” The soft click that followed his irritated voice informed me that he had hung up. I let my hand drop to my side as I looked around me to see if anyone noticed what had just gone on. Luckily, there was no one around me.
Wasting no time, I dashed back to my office. Keeping his words in mind I stopped at Ashley’s desk. She looked up at me in question but I shook my head. “I need your phone, quick – now!”
I dialed Jason’s number and prayed that he would pick up. After the third ring, I was ready to give up and go get Noah myself – but he answered. “Hello…?”
“Jason!” I choked, “I need you!”
“Woah! Charlotte? Who’s number is this? Are you alright?” he asked, his voice suddenly alert.
“NO! Will called – he’s got Noah and if I don’t go back to him he’s going to hurt her! He texted me the address and I need you –“
