Stormy was seventeen, as was her best friend, Devan, when their world changed forever.

Stormy was short, had red hair, and dark grey eyes that gave her a striking face, with freckles. She wears contacts, but they don't alter her eye color at all.

Devan was slightly taller than her. He had light brown hair with blond highlights, brown eyes, and a light sprinkling of freckles on his face. Both of them were dorks, at least by society's standards.

On Friday, the sixteenth of March, they got off the bus at the end of their road, with Stormy's little sister, Maryann. They started walking and joking around like normal. When they got to Stormy's house, they called their goodbyes and the normal vow to come over soon.

The glumness that Stormy had kept off her face all day took over. She opened the door and Maryann scampered off. Her little brother giggled from his spot on the floor. Joseph, her evil stepfather, asked her, "What's wrong, Storm?"

Stormy rolled her eyes, "Like I would tell you. Don't call me that. You aren't privileged enough to use that name. You're such a sorry excuse for a human. I'm not telling you. Ugh! I'm out of here. See you later. Stay away from Maryann." She swept out the door.

She sat on her porch and waited on Devan to appear. She waited for five minutes, then Devan appeared from the field on the side of the house that faced his house. He handed her the branch they used for their practice.

"Where's Maryann?" he asked.

"She's in the house. We'll be alone today. Come on, let's spar, then we'll leave," Stormy led the way to the back yard. They spun to face off as their muscles tensed for a fight. They stared at each other, trying to discern when the other would move. Minutes passed. Finally Devan swung, hard and fast, at her head. Stormy jumped back and blocked the swing with her stick.

"Never make the first move when your opponent is better than you," Stormy advised as she continued with her counterattack.

Before had time to react, he was on the ground. He flipped up and lunged at Stormy. He caught her on the shoulder and they fell with him on top.

Stormy laughed and pushed him off. She jumped up and twisted around. She caught him on the chest with her foot. He grunted but grabbed her foot and held on. She pushed herself up with the other leg and twisted out of his grip, her foot caught on his shoulder and she fell on top of him. They laughed.

"Nice move," Devan complimented her.

"Yeah, but I need more momentum," she criticized herself.

"Don't start explaining it; you know I'll just get lost. I'm street smart not book smart. You forget that a lot," he chuckled.

Stormy shook her head, "Well, let's go!" They took off into the woods.

She made no sound on the dead, crunchy leaves. Ever since she was ten she had run off into the woods, every chance she got. She taught herself to be the ultimate hunter, but she never hunted the animals in her woods, she studied them and occasionally came up to them. They were used to her and weren't afraid. At first she snuck up on them and they ran away, but they got used to her in time. Eventually Devan was accepted too.

Devan was never as good as she was at moving silently. And he was continually amazed at her abilities. He helped her train her senses. Devan was better than most people at it, but not nearly as good as Stormy.
