They entered the clearing just as the attackers did. They were black. Stormy and Devan had a moment of unease at fighting wolves two entire levels above them. They shook the feeling off. They knew they could do this.
“They are ours!” Stormy roared. Stay out of this, she shot at the people.
“We found them first!” one of the black ones growled.
Stormy and Devan leaped over their friends’ heads. “If you want them, fight for them,” Devan growled.
“You are foolish, young ones,” the other black wolf replied.
Stormy replied by snarling and leaping for that one’s throat. A battle ensued. Bits of fine fur and blood shot everywhere, teeth and claws tore into flesh on both sides. Devan slashed his opponents stomach, it howled in pain. Its lifeblood poured onto the ground. Devan leaped over its head and latched onto its back. He bit through the wolf’s spine. With a crack, it fell to the ground, lifeless.
Stormy had engaged the larger wolf and it was taking longer. She had a scratch down her side that was dripping blood. There was a bite on her left, hind leg. Devan tried to slink in the battle but she snarled at him. Her opponent’s right ear was reduced to tatters, he had a huge bite on his back, and multiple scratches on his face. Stormy swiped his legs out from under him. He crashed to the ground. She jumped and tore his throat out with her teeth.
They howled in victory. The Stormy snapped at Devan, “Do not try to help me next time. I had that handled.”
“I know that. I just wanted to help. The brute I fought managed to scratch me from my shoulder to wrist, and I have a bite on the back of my other shoulder. We’re even.”
She relented, “Thank you for attempting to help.”
Devan grinned. Just then, Aireya called out, “Your color is changing!”
Sure enough, brown skin was replacing gray, creeping up from their toes. However, it did not take away their wounds. They watched in amazement. Once all of them was covered, they howled, but it turned into a moan of pain. Vladimir and Aireya hurried forward. Devan and Stormy watched them warily.
Aireya pleaded, “Let us heal you. You’re going to lose too much blood.”
The wolves consented. Aireya went to Devan and Vladimir went to Stormy. She avoided looking at him, instead she huffed, “Perfect, another scar.”
Devan whined sympathetically, “They make you hotter.”
Stormy glared at him, “They make guys hotter, not girls.”
Devan huffed, “Well, ask Vladimir if he can remove it. You might want the reminder though. It makes you appear dangerous, in the eyes of any race.”
Stormy rolled her eyes, “My power is in appearing harmless. But, you’re right. I just wish. . .”
“That you were a normal girl? That your skin was smooth and unmarked? Like before you wised up and learned all this?” Devan asked shrewdly. He didn’t get the answer from her mind as he could’ve, since they basically lived in each others’ heads now, but, from his knowledge of her.
“Well, yeah. I want to be the pretty one for a change.”
“Storm, you are so much more than pretty. If you don’t believe me, ask Vlad tomorrow,” Devan said.
She shook her head, “Come on. I’m hungry, and I can feel your hunger. Let’s blow this joint!” They nodded thanks to the elves and ran off to find something to eat.
