Grandma's Rule

A contractual arrangement that follows the pattern "When you have done X (what the parent wants the child to do), then you may do Y (what the child wants to do)". Grandma's Rule is the best stated in the positive rather than the negative. Never substitute "if" for "when." This encourages a child to ask, "What if i don't do X?" Grandma's rule, which is derived from the axiom "When you work, you eat" has a powerful effect on behavior because it sets up established reinforcers (rewards, positive consequences) for appropriate behavior.
