Neutral time
Time that's free from conflict, such as the time after a tantrum is finished and your child is playing calmly. Neutral time is the best time for teaching new behavior because your child is calm and receptive to learning.
Praise
To verbally recognize a behavior you want to reinforce. Praise should always describe the behavior and not the child. For example, say, "Good eating," not "Good girl for eating." When you say "Good girl for eating," you're doing something you don't Want to do: connecting a child's worth to her behavior. You don't want to teach a child that as long as she's behaving appropriately, she's a good person---but should she make a mistake, she becomes a bad girl. We believe that children are inherently good. Their behavior is whay parents are judging and striving to change for the better.
