thirty five
Luke never thought he'd see the school again. He never wanted to see the school again. But, on Michael's thirty-first birthday, Luke decided to make an exception. He made Ashton come down from college and take him all the way to the gates of Hell, AKA public school.
Ashton complained the whole way, yet Luke knew he really didn't mind. He knew that Ashton wanted to go home for the weekend and see his mother. The only thing Ashton missed when he was away was his family (and Luke, even though he'd never admit it).
"Text me if you want to go home earlier or something," Ashton said as he pulled up alongside the curb.
"Yes, Mother."
Ashton wanted to slap Luke alongside the back of his head, but he was so pregnant and so fragile. "Love you, Preggo."
"Shut up." Luke got out of Ashton's car, balancing himself on the pavement before taking another step. His balance was extremely skewed as his belly grew every day. It was exhausting, and ugly.
Luke knew it was going to lead to something beautiful. For now, though, it was just stretch marks and sore feet. Usually, pregnant people are worried over losing the baby weight after the baby is born. Luke isn't too concerned about that. He was extremely underweight, and for once in his life, he's not.
He likes being the weight he's supposed to be. Sure, he's supposed to be about twenty more since he's carrying a child. But, he's close. That counts for something, right?
Luke got buzzed in. He turned around to wave to Ashton one last time before stepping into the office and signing in as a visitor. He recognized the entire office, he knew they recognized him, too.
They didn't speak a word, though. Just soft glances at one another as they tried to figure out if they truly did know each other.
A blush rose upon Luke's skin as he gave them a smile, quickly leaving the office. He walked through the silent halls, all the classes already in session. The fluorescent lights were dull and brought back terrible memories.
Being in school again brought a sick feeling to Luke's stomach. It was either that or the Chipotle meal made for two he ate the previous hour. He was pretty sure it was the school, though.
He started up the stairs, his footsteps echoing with each step. It took him longer than he remembered to get to the second floor. He was practically out of breath by the time he got to the top floor.
Luke took a deep breath before making his way towards his fiancé's room. He liked the sound of that. Fiancé. He doesn't have a ring on his finger yet, but definitely soon. Luke knows they're going ring shopping for the ring Luke loves the most.
In Luke's mind, they've always been married. It's not a big deal to him. He doesn't want Michael doing a cliché thing where he gets down on his knee and confesses his love. Luke wants Michael down on his knees for a much different reason.
Luke stood outside room 216, not wanting to go in. He could hear Mike's voice teaching some form of math. Luke barely passed math the first time around.
He knew the bell schedule, class would be ending within seconds. He simply had to wait with his own thoughts until the classroom cleared.
He was afraid of the eyes of the underclassmen, the ones that recognized him. He was in classes with most of these kids, now he's twenty-six weeks pregnant with their math teacher's child. That's not really normal.
He knew the teachers would recognize him, too. They'd see Luke and judge him for everything he's become. The wouldn't dare say a word, though. Maybe behind closed doors Luke and Michael would be the conversation of the century.
But for now, everything was silent.
Until the bell rung.
The hallways that once felt so alone were so full. Students towering over Luke pushed past him, trying to get to their next period. The blonde stayed out of the way, keeping his head down and begging no one would notice him. Or at least recognize him. He can't have that, he can't do that.
His prayers were answered as the open doorway cleared, leaving him space to squeeze into Michael's room.
Mike turned around, surprised at Luke's presence. "Oh, hey. How'd you get here?"
Luke held out his arms, hugging his lover. "Ashton," he responded.
Michael pecked Luke's forehead before going around him, closing (and locking) the classroom door. "How're you and Baby doing?" He sat on top of a desk, letting Luke lean on the opposite one. Michael reached out his hands, placing them softly on the growing bump.
"We're doing good. We may have eaten an entire bag of Doritos though."
"You don't even like Doritos."
Luke shrugged. "It does." He stood up, getting comfortable between Mike's legs. "I wanted to come say happy birthday to my favorite."
"I thought we were pretending it wasn't my birthday."
Luke leant forward, his breath getting closer to Michael. "Nope, just you." He looked up at the supposed love of his life, their bright eyes looking down at one another. He leant in, letting their warm kiss embrace.
Michael had his hands in Luke's hair, tugging softly to bring Luke closer to him. Luke had his fingers laying on Mike's ironed slacks, pulling the material. "I want these off now," he whispered, pulling his lips away.
"Baby, the bell is going to ring in about two minutes."
Luke pouted, his lower lip jutting out. "I hate your job."
Michael smiled. He leaned in again, taking Luke's lower lip between his teeth. "No, you don't."
The younger boy gave him a peck on the lips before taking a step back. "I'm going to stay here and bother you until the end of the day. Let's go out for something to eat." Luke walked to the back of the classroom, sitting promptly in Michael's chair.
"Sounds like a plan."
"Something with chocolate. Lots of chocolate."Mike walked over to the front board, beginning to erase the markings from last period. "Let's just slather you in chocolate."
"That's a little too kinky for me."
Michael turned around, making sure Luke saw the roll of his eyes. "You're obnoxious."
"You love me."
"I do."
