forty two
The only reason Luke ever thinks twice about skipping college is the socialization. He doesn't feel regret, just a little bit on envy.
He sits across from Ashton at the college's local Panera, both of them indulging on a late breakfast filled with endless calories. Luke pulls at his asiago cheese bagel, smashing it into smaller pieces for actually eating it.
"That's disgusting," the brunette commented.
"You're disgusting." Another thing Luke envied was Ashton's coffee. Luke couldn't have caffeine, according to his doctor. He couldn't have soda or coffee or tea or anything with caffeine. It was stressful, really, really stressful.
"Okay, Preg."
Luke rolled his eyes. He trailed his eyes behind Ashton, seeing a flamboyant, messy boy with curly black hair come rolling through the store. Matty Healy was a beautiful man that brought all attention to him when he walked into a room.
Ashton turned around, trying to figure out what Luke's pause was about. "Oh, God," he sighed.
Luke smiled at the lanky boy as he came closer. He scooted over, letting him sit directly next to Luke.
Matty collapsed into the booth, his stench of cigarettes and cheap beer wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world. Luke was trying to control his sensitive gag reflex. "I'm fucked," the college student said.
"Yeah, Dude. You missed Econ this morning," Ashton said, looking down at his breakfast.
"I didn't miss anything. Did Prof even show up?" Matty reached over, taking Ashton's spoonful of black bean soup and engulfing it.
Ash pushed the entire soup closer to Matty, not wanting it once the hungover man touched it. "Yes, he actually did. He even took attendance."
"Oh," he paused, "I am fucked." Matty stretched out his arms and back, almost hitting Luke in the head. "How're you doing, Preggo?"
"Both of you need to stop calling me that."
Matty laughed. He had a loud laugh, causing a few tables around them to turn their heads and glare. His skinny arm wrapped around the tiny boy. "Nah, we mean it out of love."
Luke froze, not sure if it was okay to accept his touch. He stayed where he was, only moving to grab another bite of his third bagel.
"Anyways, I wrote your name on the attendance but I think Prof noticed you weren't there."
"He's a bigot."
Ashton furrowed his eyebrows. "You can't use that word like that."
"Yes, I can."
"Matty, no. You can't just use any big word in a sentence to make you sound intelligent." Ashton got defensive over grammar and vocabulary. Luke couldn't imagine how often he and Matty fought over the pronunciation of the word 'clique'.
"You're the most annoying human being I've ever met," Matty stated. He wrapped his other arm around Luke, resting his head on the smaller boy's shoulder. "Do I have any other class today?"
"I don't know your schedule."
Matty closed his eyes and sighed. "Yes, you do."
Luke stayed still, not sure what he was supposed to do when a practical stranger decided to hold on to Luke for dear life. So, he continued to eat.
Ash rolled his eyes once more. "Yeah, you have Music Understanding at 2."
Luke liked Matty's presence, no matter how odd he was. He liked his chill persona and the way he spoke with his hands. He liked his foul mouth and his inability of being a responsible adult.
"Can I drop out?" Matty asked, his eyes staying closed. His arms were light yet warm on Luke's shoulders. His ringlets of curls smelled surprisingly good compared to his skin reeking of weed.
"Go for it," Luke encouraged, "Join me at home. Let's eat our hearts away and watch Animal Planet."
"You know what," Matty suddenly jumped back to his own space, his back straight and head turned towards Luke, "I am so in for that. Who the fuck needs a degree in music?" He asked, looking at both boys with wide brown eyes, "Not me."
"Does he always answer himself?" Luke asked, mostly towards Ashton.
"He sings to himself and talks to himself and yells at himself. He yells at inanimate objects, too," Ashton responded.
"Um, that towel rack came after to me." Matty leant on Luke's shoulder once more, "I want to sleep. Ashy, can you take me home?"
"How did you get here?"
"I walked. I was all alone. It was so sad."
"Can you not drive?" Luke asked, all in hopes of finding another bum like him.
"No, he can. He just ruined his license by snorting coke off of it." Ashton was filled with lots of sass on that early Tuesday morning.
"What else was I supposed to do?"
Ashton gave Matty his mom-look. "I could literally name one million things you could that doesn't involve ruining the inside of your nose."
Matty leaned close to Luke's ear, his breath able to felt on the blonde's neck. "That's not what he was saying last night."
Luke covered his laugh with the sweater paw of his hand. He bit down on the sleeve of his sweater, not able to respond.
"What'd he say?" Ashton asked, angrily furrowing his eyebrows at Luke.
"Nothin', Baby Boy." Matty took another spoonful of the black bean soup, still smiling at Luke.
"Matty," Ash gave his warning voice.
"Nothing! Just telling our good ol' friend Luke here what he's missing out in dorm room 919."
"Matty!"
Matt looked up. "That's my name. What do you want?"
"Luke, I swear he's lying. We don't do that much."
Luke shook his head. "I've known you since we were nine. I know you do that much." He made Matty laugh and Ashton blush. He liked that. Luke liked that a lot.
He thinks he's made a new friend.
"You two have totally fucked, haven't you?" Matty looked between the two friends.
"No!" Ashton defended, his cheeks still a vermillion hue.
Matty elbowed Luke. "Hit me up in a few months, Preggo." Matty said with a wink.
