forty three

"Are you scared?" Michael asked as he finally made his way into the upper loft. He placed Luke's water cup on the side of his nightstand, knowing the blond couldn't sleep with a dry mouth.

Michael knew weird things about Luke.

"Duh," Luke responded. He was laying in bed, his shirt up towards his chest. He had moisturizer in his hands, rubbing over the stretched skin. "I don't want to be cut open."

Mike laid in bed, getting as close to Luke as he physically could.

They were at forty weeks, tomorrow morning was the big day. It was their last day as Luke and Michael. Soon they'd be Dad and Daddy, no matter how cheesy it was, and no matter how many times Luke glared at Michael when he said it. It was exciting, really exciting. Their nerves were high, building up more and more as the minutes ticked on.

"I can't wait," Michael said contently. He wrapped his arm around Luke's belly once he pulled his shirt back down. "I can't believe this is finally happening."

Luke could feel his partner's breath on his neck, his fingers crawling underneath Luke's waistband. "It's flown by," the blonde said.

"I remember when you told me," Michael responded, a small laugh leaving his lips, "I thought I was going to fucking die."

Luke smiled. He reached down, putting his own hands on top of Michael's. Their baby was moving around, It wanted to get the fuck out, see the world already. Luke could see the skin of his torso moving around with every movement their baby made. "We're ready, right?"

"Of course." Mike's lips pressed to Luke's warm neck, leaving a few pecks on his skin. "Do you know how happy you make me?"

Luke wasn't sure he did. Luke would never understand how much he truly meant to Michael. Luke was more than the world, more than the universe, more than Luke's eighteen-and-a-half-year-old mind could ever understand.

"Everything happens for a reason, and that's how I know we're meant to be." Michael holds Luke closer, their bodies overlapping. Mike can feel every breath Luke takes and tries to line up their exhales.

"I'm scared," Luke said, "Of everything." Luke was never really scared before all of this, he didn't think enough to be able to be scared. He fell pregnant, and now all he does is think.

He thinks about the future often. Luke never realized how scary the future was. The future is the only unknown we, as humans, will ever experience.

"There's nothing to be scared of. I'm going to be there the entire time," Michael assured, referencing to the c-section in less than twelve hours.

Luke has never had any surgery, ever. He's never broken a bone, never messed up his inside. Michael broke almost every bone in his body—he has a metal knee cap and bolts in his arm. Mike was never scared of needles and surgery, Luke didn't realize he was until too late.

He just wants the pregnancy to be over. He never wants another needle near him ever again.

"I know," Luke said quietly, "I know."

"I'm so excited," the older man repeated once more, unable to control the grin on his mouth. This was a new chapter in their lives, a new story to tell. They were going to have It, their little It that they still haven't named.

Michael was sure they were ready. He's waited all this time and it's finally happening. He falls more and more in love with Luke every day. He knew he'd never lose that love.

Mike reaches over Luke, turning off the bedside light. "We got this," he whispered before closing his eyes. He slowly fell into a sleep as Luke stayed wide awake.
