After 4 months I saw him, but not the Cato I know, he was heading into the outskirts of District 2. No one would see if we met again, I decided to run after him, but Cato's long legs made it hard to catch up with him.
“Cato!” I shouted hoping I was close enough for him to hear me. He turns around slowly and I see his face, eyes sunken and a depressed look on his face, his expression stays the same when I approach him and I start to wonder if it was a big mistake to follow him.
“Go home” he orders sternly “Don’t get into trouble with the beast”. The beast?
“Who?” I ask confused, he sighs and shakes his head.
“You should have told me." He looks at me scornfully
“Told you what?” I reply hoping my voice doesn’t break up.
“About our parents” he says shortly.
“What about them?” I run through all the things about the things I know about Cato’s parents and nothing serious comes to mind, and this obviously is very serious by the look on my father’s face as he saw Cato. He sighs again avoiding my question and starts walking towards the secret lake. The secret lake was a tranquil, beautiful lake behind the wood which only discovered a year ago by me and my friends but was invaded by Lenox, Cato and the “gang”. He sits down by the water’s edge and dips his fingers in, making the still water ripple in little circles, that seemed to travel like water on ice, around the lake.
“Please, Cato, tell me, I thought you said you’d tell me everything.” I plead, if I knew then maybe I could sort it out then Cato and I could get back together.
“Fine, your father and my mother were in love, like we are, I mean we were, then they had an argument and my mother had an affair with my father in spite then my father proposed and she accepted. Your father tried to get her back but she ignored him, your father then had a fight with my father and now they won’t speak and we aren’t allowed to see each other.” He finally breaks for breath and dip my fingertips in the water processing what Cato had just told me.
“I’m so sorry” Cato says, I look up at him and I see tears in his eye.
, “I thought we would spend the rest of my life with you but I was wrong”. I take his hand in mine and we stare at each other silently until he leans in and kisses me on the lips for what seems like forever.
“Let’s do it, let’s run away together, get married and have a family, I love you and not being with you is tearing me apart day by day” he says his eyes suddenly wide open, I sigh, run away?
“But what about the reaping? We would get caught” I ask worriedly.
“No we wouldn’t, I promise” he says with such conviction, I think about for 5 minutes.
Finally I say “Ok let’s go” I see the cheeky smile return and he kisses me again more pressure than I’m used to.
“I almost forgot, here, I kept it in my pocket, just in case I met you again, but I guess it was only hope” He give me a small purple box, I open it suspiciously and find a beautiful sapphire and diamond heart necklace.
“It’s beautiful” I gasp, I stretch upwards and kiss him shyly. He grabs my hand, links our fingers together and we run out of District 2.
