It’s me, I tell myself, move and try to look like you’re pleased or you couldn’t care less. So I do as I’m told and grin as I walk down the middle passage and past Cato, I avoid his eye contact knowing any contact with him now would kill any chance I had of keeping the tears that are threatening to make an unwanted appearance, and march confidently up the stairs and stand like a peacekeeper next to Lawron while he asks a few questions then moves on to the boys bowl. My heart misses beat after beat and I have trouble breathing normally as the manicured hand dips into the bowl and whips it back again, he walks back to the microphone and I glare at the slip of paper as if my glare will be able to make it set on fire but obviously it doesn’t work and Lawron calls out the name and I breathe out a deep sigh of relief, it’s not Cato, if Cato had been reaped I could never in a million years kill him, I’d rather die myself and let him win which I’m sure if he was reaped he would do unless some stupid arrogant person who was super clever volunteered . A small weedy looking boy with black hair starts to tremble his way through the crowd of boys, although I feel sympathy for him its good that he has been reaped as it is one less powerful opponent I will have to face to come home again.
Then there’s a disturbance in the middle of the crowd of boys all breathing deeply trying to calm themselves down, a disturbance in the middle where Cato is standing, a disturbance in the middle where Cato was standing. The disturbance is Cato, making his way to the roped area that all the children are supposed to stand like sheep in a pen. He walks up to the middle passage and time seems to stand still as everyone realised what he’s just about to do and a curse under my breath but a bit too loud as the microphone manages to pick it up and spread it around the square. I blush despite the complete panic rushing around in my blood, I completely forgot to make Cato promise that he wouldn’t volunteer if I was reaped. In a last attempt to stop what is inevitable, Cato is so protective of me he will sacrifice his own life for my own but I will not let that happen, not as long as I live. I try to grab his attention subtly and I shake my head vigorously but he ignores me.
“I volunteer” he calls, clear as if he really believes this is the right thing to do, my heart sink down past my feet and down to the centre of the earth and out the other side, out into space. I can’t even bare to look at him as he mounts the stage and passes behind me, stroking my back as he does, to reach the other side of Lawron.
Finally after a few questions to Lawron says “Happy Hunger Games AND May The Odds Be EVER In Your Favour!!!!” the seal plays out with a flourish and we are lead to the doors of the justice building.
Cato whispers in my ear “ I’m sorry if I’ve upset you but I’m not going to let you risk your life, I will protect you with my life.” And he takes my hand, I start to take it back when I think, what am I doing, I only have a few day until we are thrown into an arena and in 2 weeks or so one of us will be dead, and I will not let it be him.
