I sigh deeply with a mass of guilt pulling my shoulders down and trudge to a mass of girls my age.
“Clove!” someone shouts and I spin around to locate the voice. I smile when I recognise them, Astria ,then I feel more guilt, I had left her for Cato and completely forgotten about her. She stops walking she holds her arms out then takes them back as if rethinking her actions but then she holds them out again her smile beaming which is a rarity at the reapings unless there is a super confident career, like I used to be before I ran away. I immediately embrace her and it feels alien but normal at the same time, she’s about to say something when Lawron, the District 2 escort who is obsessed with the colour purple, purple hair, purple clothes and shoes, even his skin is dyed purple, strides up to the microphone.
“Welcome to the reaping of the 74th Annual Hunger Games, and may the odds be EVER in your favour” he sings,Lawron starts talking about the dark ages and how the Capitol helped us from nothing to what we have now, which in some districts like 12 is still the case, and I switch off and search for Cato in the mass of trembling bodies, but they all look the same in District 2. Finally I find him, I recognise him by his matted hair and extremely neat clothes that do look like someone’s just taken them out of a shop, which in this case just happens to be true but most of all his aura of complete power and strength that has made every boy close to him edge away from him a bit as if intimidated by him, but for me it’s comfort and security. It’s only by the time Lawron has made his way to the girl reaping bowl before his eyes met mine, usually there would be some kind of spark but not now, not today, Lawron cautiously picks out a paper slip and I pray it doesn’t have my name on it. Lawron calls out the name of the female tribute and my heart stops, my prayer wasn’t answered.
