Cody's P.O.V.
On Monday, Xael wasn't at school. I was getting really worried, and I texted her nonstop. Then I realized that she might've gotten her results back and she might've had to go to the office or something. I zipped through the the school day and sped over to her house. I knocked on her door, and her mother answered. Her face was red and her eyes had tears pouring out of them.
"Mrs. H, are you okay?" I asked, concerned.
"It's Xael. She's sick again." She replied weakly as she burst into a fresh set of tears. My face turned white. I couldn't believe it! Not again.
Her mom gestured for me to come in, but I couldn't. I politely shook my head no, and explained that I was going to the hospital to see her.
I rushed to my car and drove a little bit over the speed limit (oops... :/), but it all paid off because I got to see her sooner.
I was told her room number, and I zipped over to it. It was on the third story, so I was out of breath from sprinting up the stairs when I got there. I walked in and found Xael sitting in bed with her phone. She looked up and saw me, and quickly put it away.
"Hey Xael. How come you haven't answered my texts? You were just on your phone..." I asked.
"What?! No I wasn't. I haven't been on my phone all day. I don't know what you're talking about. Why are you so self-centered?" She snapped. I backed away a little bit.
"Jeez, okay! Calm down. But I think the real question is why are you in the hospital again?"
"Ok. I'm sorry. It's just I...didn't want you to find out and make a big deal about it..." She replied.
"Find out about what? It's okay, you can tell me anything." I said gently.
"I have leukemia again..." She whispered, "And it's gotten worse. Much worse." She looked down.
"Babe...I'm so sorry... Can they fix it again?" I asked hopefully. She looked up at me with tears in her eyes.
"That's what I didn't want you to find out about. They said I only have about... 3 months left." I could barely hear her when she said that, but it hit me like a brick.
3 months! That's it! No, I can't go the rest of my life without her.
It took me a while to reply.
"No... 3 months...that's it? That can't be... I love you too much." I said under my breath, but I knew she had heard it. Then I got louder, "So is that why you've been rushing things in our relationship and not telling me stuff?" I asked. She nodded. I looked away.
I couldn't believe it. 3 months. That was less time than it seems.
I walked over to her bed and held her hand. I looked her straight in the eye.
"Listen to me. This is going to be a very hard time for you, but we're going to get through it. We're going to make sure that you live for 50 more years, okay? Don't worry. It's all going to be alright. Because no matter what happens, I will always love you." I said to her. She smiled.
Little did I know, that was one of the last smiles I would ever see from her...
