CHAPTER 7: SECRETS LIKE THESE
I didn't know what to feel, happy that we're alive or frustration that we failed. Jasper turned back to me clearly frustration "I had it down. It shouldn't have gotten away"
I was at a loss at what to say. The air now a little warmer blew leaves around our feet as Jasper walked towards the cemetery entrance. I didn't want to be left alone out here so I followed him. The moon continued its game of hide and seek while I lit the way with the light of my cell phone.
"Should we try again tomorrow night?" I asked just to say something.
"Alix" he said shaking his head "that was it. Our one chance, now it knows we're after it, it'll be prepared next time"
"Really? Its mouth looked bigger than its brain. I've got a pretty good hunch it's not that smart"
Jasper shot me a look of annoyance. "I'm joking" I told him. "Next time we're just going to have to be more prepared"
"There is no next time for you" he said sternly.
"Why not?" I sulked
He ignored me and walked back the way we came in. The next two minutes I was practically running to meet his long stride that he called walking. "So that's it for the night?" I panted beside him. "Are we not going to go after it like normal people?"
"Normally I would but where this thing is headed I rather not follow without backup" he replied.
Our cars came into view parked innocently in the darkness. "So what are you going to do now?" I asked ignoring the fact that he didn't consider me backup anymore.
"Nothing I can do for now" Jasper walked to the driver's side of his car and opened the door. I did the same.
"Go home and have a good nights rest" he said before getting in and speeding off.
*************************************************
The next day I slept in and later met Kazia and Jay at the pier where one of the local rock bands were playing that night. Lisbon was out with the fancy crowd and couldn't join us, which was okay because she wouldn't have enjoyed the scene. When it was over we made our way to an empty table outside a restaurant situated on the pier to eat. While we walked I mistakenly bumped into one of the crowds occupants spinning me around. I froze. Literally. The moment he touched me I felt the coldness rising up my arm and spreading throughout my body. I looked at the man who bumped me. He was middle aged and looked human except his eyes gave him away. They were greenish-yellow and the pupils were a slit like a snake. He walked away turning back to give a sickening, knowing, sly smile. Unmoving I watched his back disappeared into the crowd.
Someone grabbed my arm and I jumped, the coldness still lingering inside me. Jay and Kazia's concerned faces studied me.
"What's wrong?" Jay asked.
"She's so cold" Kazia told Jay, her hand still on me.
I didn't want to worry my friends too much so I quickly shook off my state.
"It's nothing" I told them, but Jay wasn't fooled
"Why are you so pale?" he asked me.
Faking surprise I said "Am I?"
He glared at me but I ignored him as Kazia looked at us her eyes wide. What could I tell them? Some dude gave me a piece of his mind? I didn't even know who he was or what kind of demon. My friends couldn't handle that. All they knew was human and animals, not demons or any other supernatural beings and I wasn't going to be the one to break up their perfect world. I didn't know what snake eyes wanted from me and I wrecked my brains trying to figure it out as we ate. Kazia and I carpooled with Jay that night so he took us home with Kazias house being the first stop. We sat silent in the car as we drove to my house.
