Chapter Three

Faelinn chased after Jade, surprised at her speed. He had almost caught up when he saw her turn to peek at the dragon. Her face a mask of fear, eyes slitted in determination.

At that exact moment, a particularly large branch hung in front of her. He tried to warn her but he suddenly felt claws wrap around his waist and yank him off the ground.

Before Faelinn could yell to her, she had slammed into it and knocked herself out. She fell to the ground, limp as a noodle.

The dragon then snatched up Jade as easily as he took Faelinn and flew straight up into the morning sky. Faelinn flailed his arms and legs trying to loosen the tight grip the creature had on him. Just as he was starting to slip, the dragon spoke.

"My god, can you not sit still for just a moment!? Why can you not relax like your friend over here? She seems comfortable. Now before you go and decide you would rather plummet to your very painful death than live, let me tell you that I am not here to harm you or your friend." It sighed, "I have been searching for you for a long time."

Faelinn didn't reply, for he was at a loss for words. The dragon gave him a questioning look, then turned away, looking at the sun rising in the sky.

"I understand that you have no right to trust me, but listen to what I have to say. I was sent by the great 'Lexion to find you, as foretold in the prophecy. I am the last of my kind to walk this earth, the last of the guardian dragons."

Faelinn stayed speechless, his mouth open in an 'O' of shock. His face portraying his emotions like an open book.

"My name is Xavion, and I have sworn an oath to help, protect, and care for you as long as I am your Guardian."

Jade slowly woke to voices. One deep curious voice, and another deep rumble.

She only half listened to their conversation, drifting in and out of sleep.

She rolled over and woke with a start when her nose scratched along a rough tree trunk. She started to sit up, but then collapsed back down, moaning in pain.

The agony in her head was like a weight crashing down on her. It made her dizzy, the world spinning around her. Swaying back and forth, teasing her.

She lifted a shaking hand to her forehead, feeling the large bump in her skin. Bringing her hand to the front of her face, studying it like it knew what happened to her.

Faelinn knelt beside her, "That was some blow you took to the head, Jade." She rolled her head to look at him. Giving his grinning face a confused frown. 'Was he not taken by a dragon?' She must be hallucinating.

"I guess you learned your lesson, large tree branches will not jump out of the way for you." Laughter bubbled from him as he looked up at the dark blue dragon.

'Wait. . dark blue what? Did I just say DRAGON?'

It was resting a few paces away, its tail curled around its body, flicking side to side. It was making an odd throaty noise. Jade realized it must be laughter.

'This must be a dream.' she thought feverishly, 'That same dragon knocked me out, just hours ago. Why hasn't he eaten us yet? And now it is laughing at me! What a horrible dream!'

Speaking in a slow monotone Faelinn spoke. "Jade, this is Xavion. He has come to aid us on our journey."

Jade couldn't hide her surprise. It was too much to take in! A dragon, helping elves? They had been enemies for hundreds of years now! How could this be?
