Shuurai groaned. She felt dizzy from using too much chakra. That teleportation jutsu had been her limit. She glared at the dead body lying next to her. "You know," Shuurai began fiercely. "I don't know why I didn't dispose of you right then and there." Her gaze became a little sadder for a moment. "But Haku would have wanted this..."

Rain had begun to fall; gentle patters were heard on the forest floor. "You... you died not understanding. Haku, he wanted to protect someone precious to him, to work for him, to fight for him and to make his dreams come true. Your dream... was his dream." Shuurai sighed, then looked down at her bloodstained hands.

"Once, during one of our battles, he said something to me."

Flashback:

Shuurai panted as her sudden burst of anger subsided. Haku was on the ground, struggling to get up.

Right, disclaimer: I don't own Naruto, or any of it's characters/plot/dialogue.

"Can you understand? Not having a dream...not being needed by anyone... the pain of simply living."

"What are you trying to say?"Shuurai snapped. They had always been fighting as enemies, but through these exchanges of blows from time to time, they'd actually become quite close. Shuurai didn't want to have to kill him.

Haku smiled sadly. "You have taken away my reason for existing. Zabuza has no need for weak shinobi."

Shuurai huffed. He always said the same thing near the end of every battle, and it annoyed her. She frowned, a thought having occured to her. "Don't you have others important to you?"

"I had people dear to me, a long time ago. My... parents. They were very kind people, and I loved them. But, when I grew up and began to learn the ways of this world, something happened."

"What?" Shuurai was interested. She'd never heard this before.

"My father killed my mother. Then he tried to kill me. But before I knew it, I had killed him. My own father. And at that time, I realised something. I am a person who is unwanted."

"Ah..." Shuurai finally understood the reason why Zabuza was so important to Haku.

End flashback

Do you... understand now?" Shuurai looked back at the body and laughed softly at herself. "I'm talking to a dead man. I must be losing my mind." She heaved herself up and began burying Zabuza. She smiled at both graves. "Rest in peace."

Shuurai heaved herself off the ground and made her way towards Tazuna's house.
