"Ready?" he asked, accepting her hand in his and squeezing it tightly, reassuringly. Breathless, she nodded, using her free hand to wipe her bangs from her sweaty forehead. "As ready as I'll ever be. What about you, flyboy? Ready for parenthood? I think your son or daughter is ready. He or she doesn't seem to have any patience when it comes to their arrival." He laughed heartily at her response, running to keep pace with the nurse who was pushing his wife's repulsor chair to a vacant medroom. Behind the older nurse was Luke, running too, chasing the group with a holorecorder at a respective distance. The uncle seemed to be just as excited for this as the parents. "Are you feeling alright? Contraction's not too bad?"
"Han," she breathed heavily, moving her free hands to her bulbous stomach, smoothing out the fabric of her shirt and rubbing her stomach affectionately. "Things have progressed since labor started twelve hours ago. By now, I'll have you know exactly how much it excites me to get this whole labor thing done wi- OH!" she gasped, wincing in utter pain and habitually squeezing Han's hand tighter. "Han! Hold me, just hold me."
"Hey, it's alright, Princess. I'm here. I'm not leaving. We're doing this together, alright?"
"Ohh, baby, please come quick."The nurse brought them into a small room and turned to help the laboring mother-to-be out of her chair and into the bed in the room. Han and Luke both took a side of the bed, letting her grab their hands as something there to squeeze. "Alright, Mrs.Solo," the nurse smiled at her, pulling her knees up and setting her feet on raised pedals connected to the bed. "You're fully dilated, so we're going to have you start pushing immediately, okay?" She nodded, grimacing in horrid pain. "Okay, Leia. In a few seconds, I'll tell you when to start." Another, younger nurse hurried into the room and came to aid the first nurse and pulled a blanket from the closet in the corner. Leia screamed, taking Luke and Han's hands and squeezing them until their knuckles tuned white. "Go ahead, Leia. Now, push! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Rest."
Leia's muscles relaxed slightly, but her shoulders quickly hunched over again as another contraction broke through her body and awareness. "One, two, three, four, five . . ."
"HAN!"
"Keep it up, sweetheart," Han comforted his wife through the pain, stroking his thumb up and down her hand. "You're doing great."
"Alright, Leia. The head's coming. I need you to give me your strongest push. The baby's ready. You need to give it your all."
"HAN!" she screamed again as the baby began to crown and her body slowly eased out. The nurse held her gently, cupping her head and preparing to catch the rest when she came. Leia gave one more push and the waist and legs quickly slipped out, falling into the nurse's ready hands. Leia fell back against the pillows, overcome with exhaustion. She smiled, though, as Han and Luke sang cheers to her, telling her how beautiful the baby was."Congratulations, Mister and Misses Solo. It's a girl!" The younger nurse cleared the girl's mouth and laid the blood-covered child on her mother's chest. But, Leia just beamed at her, stroking her head, taking a strand of her daughter's dark, downy hair to curl around her finger. "Rey," she murmured, taking the girl into her arms. "Rey Solo. Hi there, baby girl. Hi, Rey."
Han, tears brimming in his eyes, laid a hand on his daughter's head and wrapped an arm around his wife's shoulders. They looked to each other and smiled, crying in their joy. "Hey, there, kid," the new father said, offering the newborn girl his greatest lopsided grin. "Welcome to the world, Rey."
Leia couldn't manage any words that could truly express her happiness, so she said nothing at all, just cried and admired her new child. Her first child. She bent her head to kiss Rey on her forehead, but suddenly howled and nearly dropped the baby. Han's hands flew out and he caught Rey just as she burst into high pitched wails, taking her into one arm, the other going to comfort his wife. "Leia?"
She began crying again, taking his hand in hers again and searching for her brother's. Luke guided his hand to hers and wiped her forehead, confused by what was causing his sister so much pain now. The two nurses hurried back to the business end of the bed and did a quick look around to figure out what was happening. "Han, are there any twins in your family or hers?" one asked, reaching for another blanket from the closet. Han watched her and a bell began to go off in his head, but the thought of it being even possible terrified him.
"I'm Leia's twin brother," Luke admitted, slowly, cautiously, the light switch flicking on in his head too.
