I knew this day was coming for awhile now. Admittedly, I forgot, but the second I saw the missed call from my landlord everything came crashing back to me.
He owned the apartment building I was living in and had been planning to renovate the whole thing. He promised all of his tenants that they could return, but at the moment I needed to find somewhere else to stay in the meantime.
Originally, I had arranged to stay with my mom for the month or two, but of course that wasn't an option anymore. I still had my dad to fall back on, and I knew he would gladly take me in. The only problem was that he lived all the way in Long Island. It was too far of a commute for me.
It had been a week since the wedding. A whole week went by where I didn't talk to anyone. A whole week since I last saw Dante.
It was killing me. I had this weird obsession with him. He took up every inch of my mind. I began to work later into the night just to distract myself, but it didn't work. I needed to see him one last time, say a proper goodbye, I needed to get him out of my system.
I was homeless and what better place to go to than a five star hotel? The five star hotel that was only a few blocks away from my job. The five star hotel that he lived in. The universe was screaming at me to go back there.
Him being there was just a plus of course. He wasn't the sole reason for me choosing to stay there. Sometimes life sends you curve balls. Maybe this one was sent for a reason, or maybe I've been reading too much romance.
I took the day off from work, and invited Jade and her boyfriend, Luke over. We packed like crazy. The apartment needed to be empty by 12:00 tomorrow afternoon, so we called a moving company and had them ship my furniture to a storage unit. I planned on only taking a few bags full of clothes and toiletries with me.
"You're going back to that same hotel?" Jade asked me, trying, but failing miserably to conceal her smile.
"Skyla just can't get enough of that Italian sausage." Luke joked. "Or do you prefer cannoli?" I smacked him hard on the back of his head but they both just laughed.
"He's not the reason why I'm going back there. It's really close to my job and the hotel is nice."
"And those are all very good reasons." Jade said. "Just admit that he was also a major influence in that decision."
"Can we please finish with these last few boxes?" I didn't want to talk about this right now. I still didn't know what I was going to do. I felt like a stalker, but I wasn't a stalker. I had other reasons besides him to stay at that hotel.
"What are you going to say to him?" Jade wouldn't stop asking questions.
"I don't know! Who knows if I'll even see him. The hotel is big and I'm not planning on staying there forever." Who knows if he even wants to see me again. Maybe he doesn't. He probably regrets that night entirely.
I spent all week trying to decide what Dante thought of me. One day I came up with the conclusion that he was dying to see me again, but the next day I figured that he probably didn't want to have anything to do with me. It was just a stupid one night stand. That's all it was, all it is, and all it ever will be. A stupid one night stand.
"You remember where his room is, don't you, Sky?" I was only a few seconds away away from strangling Luke.
"I'm going to kill your boyfriend." Was all I said. They knew I wouldn't kill anyone, but we all shut up and went back to work.
