These updates are kind of short but I feel like I've been nonstop writing. Oh and by the way this chapter took place before the last one where Dante and Skyla saw each other at the bar.
My alarm went off at six thirty in the morning, already ruining my day. I had returned to being a workaholic, it kept me distracted.
I rolled myself out of bed, pulling the blankets with me. Together we fell onto the carpeted floor. Normally blankets weren't the thing hugging me in the morning. "Stop." I said out loud. "You need to stop."
I couldn't stop and it annoyed me. I was almost positive that he would've came to me by now. But he didn't come. He didn't call.
I wanted to swear off guys all together. Swear off love. I was in love with Nick and he broke my heart. Now Dante did the same. He shattered it into a million tiny pieces by letting me walk away.
I did the right thing though. I wanted to trust him, but how could I trust someone who didn't give me a reason to?
I showered, put my hair in a ponytail, and got dressed. Work. I thought with disgust. The word made me cringe. Although I had practically been living there for the past week, it was still miserable. I wanted another assistant but didn't have the balls to ask Gavin. I knew the look he would give me. It would say, really Skyla? You need something else. Do you ever stop asking for things?
No Gavin. I would think back. I don't stop asking for things. I'm a spoiled little rich girl who gets everything she wants.
Ok that's not entirely true. Materialistic wise I did, but I didn't get everything. I didn't get the truth from Dante.
Dante, Dante, Dante. His name began to irritate me. It was the only thing that had been going through my head.
I threw on the first thing I touched and went to work. I got so frustrated at my computer that I magically grew a pair. "Gavin," I demanded, not faking a smile. "We need to talk. The work keeps piling up and it's only me and Stephanie. Do you realize that she called out again." It had been three days in a row.
"I know Skyla." He sighed, throwing down a stack of files. "I knew you were going to ask." I wasn't really asking. I was demanding. "I'll find you someone soon." I stood there waiting for specifics. Gavin was known for telling people what they wanted to hear just so they would leave him alone.
"You don't believe me?" He asked. "Come here. I was actually working on it right before you walked in." On his computer screen was a list of people who were qualified for the job. Now it was just a matter of picking one out. "I'll send it to you. Pick whoever you want."
"Thank you." I said. That one little act actually made me feel a lot better.
Jennifer, Jade's roommate called me which was completely unexpected. "Hello?"
"Hey Sky, I was just wondering if you knew what's up with Jade?"
"What do you mean?" I asked incredibly confused. Jennifer and I were friends but it was because of Jade. We didn't normally talk.
"When you nod your head yes but you wanna say no." She sang
"Jennifer!" I snapped. I really wasn't in the mood to laugh at that.
"Sorry, I couldn't help it. But yeah, I don't know. She's been in her room and won't come out. I'm actually kind of worried. Can you believe she turned down ice cream cake? Anyways I figured you might know something."
I hadn't seen Jade since the new year. She seemed fine then. And her refusing ice cream cake! That may sound like a stupid reason to worry about someone but in Jade's case this was critical. That was her favorite thing. That's what she ate after her foster mother threw her out of the house for being a whore. She came to me in tears with a big ice cream cake. We stayed up all night eating and drinking wine.
"Ice cream cake?" I asked in disbelief.
"Yeah. And her door is locked. I don't even think she's came out to pee today."
"I haven't really seen much of her. I'll come over though."
"Ok thanks. She's really freaking me out."
I left work and took a cab to her place. I honestly couldn't think of anything that would have her this messed up. Whenever anything had Jade depressed she would eat her way through it. That's what she was known for. That's why she lived at the gym. Jade loved food, but she also loved her bikini ready body.
"Hey!" Jennifer said giving me a hug. "It feels like we haven't seen each other in forever."
"Yeah it's been a couple months."
"Well I don't know what's wrong with her. I haven't been home much, but I came back today and she hasn't came out."
I knocked on her door. "Jade open up."
"Go away." She called.
"You know I'll find a way in. Open the door."
"No!"
Jennifer just looked at me, not sure what to do. I pulled a pin out of my hair and stuck it in the lock.
"Whoa, you're good." She said as the door unlocked.
"Lots of practice."
Jade was in her bed under the covers with the lights off. "What's wrong?" I asked sitting down beside to her.
"Nothing." I heard her voice crack.
"Don't lie to me."
"I'm scared." She squeaked, trying to hold back tears. I pushed her hair out of her eyes.
"Of what?"
"I really f@cked up, Sky."
Oh yes, because that was helpful. "Did you and Luke break up?"
Now the tears started to flow. "No." She sobbed. "I was a f@cking whore just like my mom said." More tears. "I had sex with Sean, Skyla." She sat up, having trouble breathing. Her eyes were wide and desperate. "We used a condom but I'm late. I'm never late. I've never been late. I'm so late." She began to hyperventilate. "It broke, but I didn't realize because we were so f@cking drunk. I didn't remember until now when I was thinking ..." She shook her head.
Jennifer and I just looked at each other, neither one of us knew what to say or do.
