Chapter 7

This had all happened before.  He was staring at you with a near-murderous look again except this time it didn’t look like he’d be crying.  Before you could even ask what he was doing at your flat he spoke:

“What happened last night?”

“What?”  You asked back.  You were honestly surprised.  You thought he was here to apologise or to ask what actually happened.

“You heard me.”  He replied.  “What happened with you and Tammi last night?”

You thought back.  You vaguely remembered shouting at Michael before slapping him.  Then you went to sit in the car.  You remembered Tammi coming to talk to you.  It all came flooding back now.

“I was angry at you” you sighed.  “It’s like you chose to date her on purpose.  She’s so pretty and funny and she makes me see how bad I was to you.  Making you stay in and get pizza when I didn’t want to go to parties.”  He looked up at you after you said this.  You looked down before speaking “I was jealous of her.  She asked what happened with us so I told her...but I was drunk so I might have made some stuff up...”

You trailed off, annoyed at yourself for leaving yourself so vulnerable in front of him.

After a couple of minutes you risked looking up at him.  He was looking down at his shoes.

“She broke up with me.”  He mumbled.

“Oh,” you whispered “I’m sorry, do you want me to speak to her?”  Not really wanting to but you saw it as a way to cut through the thick silence surrounding the two of you.

“No, it’s alright” he said looking up at you.  “She said if I tried to talk to her she’d slap me.  What did you tell her?”

“I told her about what happened and how insensitive you were...” you looked up at him.  “You don’t look too upset by the fact she broke up with you.”  You pointed out.

“It wasn’t serious.  We just talked sometimes and had lunch together...” he trailed off.

You were secretly happy about this news but kept your smile hidden.

“How’s Cal?”  You asked the smile definitely gone, suddenly remembering last night.

“Hungover.  I don’t think he remembers anything.”

“Right.”  You replied uneasily.  “If it wasn’t serious why you are so annoyed she broke up with you?”  You asked frowning.

“I’m not annoyed by that...I’m annoyed at what you said last night.”

“What I said last night?” you asked your voice rising.  “Why is everything my fault?  I tried to get over you but it took two people to end this relationship!”

“Yeah; you and that guy Matthew!”

“Did you not listen to me last night?  I – never – cheated – on – you!”  You shouted back.

“That’s not what it looked like” He retorted.

“Erg.  You never listen to me!  You never listened to me!  How can I be so stupid to still love you after everything I-”

“You still love me?” He questioned.

“Yes.”  You sighed.  “I can’t deny it anymore.”

He was silent for a while.

He looked like he was thinking everything over.  You decided to let him think; it was better to have a quiet, angry Michael than a loud, angry Michael.

You stood awkwardly in the middle of your living room, looking everywhere except his eyes.  You decided to sit down just for something to do.

Finally after what felt like forever he spoke:

“What really happened that say?”

You looked up into his eyes shocked.

Were you ready to tell him?
