Chapter 2
The emotions flooded back again – the raw agonizing pain of not being able to tell him.
“It’s not like he’s cheating on you” you thought with a grimace.
Deciding you couldn't face seeing Katie and Luke at that moment, you left the flat after leaving them a note. You weren’t sure where you were going but after about ten minutes of wandering you found yourself outside the café where you and Michael used to go.
You walked inside and the smell of espresso hit you like a pillow to the face. The café hadn’t changed in the two years you’d been absent but you felt uneasy as if even the paintings on the walls were judging you.
You eventually forced yourself to go to the counter and order your usual – a frothy cappuccino. After being handed your drink you looked around and found a quiet table. You sat down and took your phone out to check Katie hadn’t left you any messages.
After ten minutes the door opened again but you took no notice as people drifted in and out of the café all the time. A cough interrupted your thoughts. You looked up to see a girl looking at you expectantly. She was taller than you with bleached blonde hair and blue eyes. You thought that you recognised her from somewhere but your thoughts were stopped when she spoke.
“Do you mind if me and my boyfriend sit here with you?” She asked with a Californian accent. “There’s only this table free.” She added with a small smile.
You scanned the room and found she was telling the truth.
“Sure” you said removing your bag from one of the chairs.
“I’m Tammi” she said.
“I’m [y/n]” you replied with a small smile.
After a few minutes you were talking like you were best friends and you noticed you felt better than you had in ages. It sounded stupid but this moment seemed like the best you’d had in months.
But then that moment ended. Tammi looked up at someone.
“Oh finally what took you so long?” she asked the boy that must have been her boyfriend. You looked up to introduce yourself but the words didn’t come out and you forgot how to breathe.
“Oh sorry, [y/n]. This is Michael- my boyfriend” Tammi said smiling.
“I know who he is” you managed to spit out.
Before Tammi could reply Michael spoke.
“What are you doing here?”
The venom in his voice and the anger in his eyes were unmistakable and you wished the floor would swallow you up.
“I could ask you the same” you replied through gritted teeth.
“This is my table” he said putting his drinks down.
“I don’t see your name on it” you replied, anger flaring through your body.
“It's right there” he said looking down at the writing on the corner of the table. It read:
“Michael & [y/n] forever”
“Oh look at that my name’s on it too.” You pointed out with a sarcastic smile.
“I’m leaving anyway,” you continued “it was nice to meet you Tammi” you said pushing past Michael.
Once you were outside the first few tears spilled down your cheeks. You managed to make it home without breaking down but once you got to your room you shut the door and cried more than you had in months.
