Asher let go of my hand and ran toward the disaster. I ran after him the best I could. The explosion had come from a building that was down a hall that was connected to the main room. I hobbled as fast as I could and then I felt myself get dizzy. Hang in there I said trying not to let the nausea get to me.
I kept running down the large corridor following Asher trying to push pass the large crowd gathering.
"Asher," I screamed.
I knew he couldn't hear me. Once I had got past the whole crowd I saw the building that was on fire. It was a large and seemed to be a government building or a gathering place. The top floor was blazing red and orange. People were pulling each other from the fiery inferno. Asher ran in with no hesitation.
I followed him not even realizing what I was doing. As I followed him my eyesight was automatically filled up with smoke. I then dropped to my knees and began to crawl. I crawled a few yards in and I looked around. My eyes were met with another persons. It was an old woman the same one Asher was talking to earlier. She was suffocating from the smoke.
I grabbed her arm and tried to pull her out, but she was caught under a part of a wall. I began to lift it, but I quickly discovered I wasn't strong enough. I then decided to lay next to her and lift it with my legs. I pushed and pushed until there was a release in tension. My left leg felt like it had just broken, but I knew it was just earlier pain.
The lady groaned and I pulled her out. I searched for the exit and once I found it I dragged her by the arms all the way into the front of the building. There other people came and took her from me. I continued to go in and out of the building until I was on my fourth person and a hand grabbed me.
It was Asher.
"Everyone is out," he said pulling a fleck of ash out of my hair.
I couldn't help but hug him.
"I kept going in looking for you," I said trying to fight back the tears.
He held me tight and kissed me on the forehead.
"Your so brave Piper," he said, his voice shaking.
"Can we go home now?" I asked almost crying.
"Yeah, one second," he said.
Then he left me and I stood alone. Then I saw someone running towards me. It was Locke.
"Are you okay?" he asked looking at me worriedly.
"Yeah, I am tired," I said.
"Good," he said "You are a hero."
"I guess I just wish that I knew who did it." I said.
He shrugged and looked at me.
"Do you need me to take you home?" he asked hesitantly.
"Um, I don't know how long Asher will be," I said "Let me ask him."
I started to walk over to Asher when I was met by a lady who came up and thanked me. I acknowledged her and then kept walking toward Asher he was surrounded by some more robbed people. They were talking very sternly to each other. When I came up to them they all hushed and turned to me. Asher was the first to speak up.
"Hey, I will be a while. Do you mind waiting?" He said.
"Actually I was wondering if Locke could walk me home," I said meeting the gaze of the other people.
"Sure," he said turning back to the group.
I began to walk back toward Locke when I heard some of the voices behind me.
"You are a leader. You are not to be lovey dovey with that girl. She is dangerous," I heard one lady say.
Then I heard another "she is an Exlander."
I wanted to turn around and ask Asher what they meant, but I knew that would be stubborn. I decided to keep walking, but tried to keep listening. Then I was interrupted by Locke.
"You ready?" he asked.
I nodded, Then we started to walk back to Asher's house. On the way I picked up the bags I had dropped earlier as I was running. We walked past the crowd as people thanked me and shook my hand. I didn't even feel like a hero. I felt like it was the least I could do.
When we approached Asher's house I said goodnight to Locke. I opened the door and dropped my stuff on the counter. I tried to make it to the guest room but I was so tired I went into Asher's room and fell asleep on his bed.
