I need you

"Get up!" Reuben snarled. My face lay toward the ground as arms covered any openings. "Face me! Mine enemy! You ...coward!"

The last one hit home. My necklace glowed a dark red and burned into my soul. Anger and rage had taken over my actions. Using my power, I willed his metal chains to heat to unbearable temperatures, as my face remained hidden by my hair. Only after I heard his cry of pain did I stop and lay still.

After a few moments of silence, he spoke, "You can't win. Even if we weren't able to destroy you. The villains are ready to rise from the underground and break this city. Their numbers are far to great in number for the few heroes willing to protect these wretched people."

"So your willing to let Mat die? I whispered.

"Never! I'm going to find her and get her out of this place. And once my friends have taken over I'll bring her back."

"And if she refuses?"

He paused. "I'm not giving a choice."

Both of us lay still as we let strength build itself back up. The buzz of the quiet cell threatened to drive me insane. So I asked:

"Why so cruel?"

Reuben huffed and scooted away to lean against a wall. I began to think I'd receive no answer.

"I was an experiment of the fifteenth dimension. The experiment were deadly, yet, out of three hundred test subjects, I was one of the eleven that survived. A girl, her two friends, the eye brothers , the terrible twins and three others who ran off to another country made it back to earth intact.

I wanted to travel with the girl and her two friends. But as soon as our safety pod landed, after our crazy escape, the girl and her friends ran off. Hypno eyes took me in and his brother decided we should see a bit of the world where we would have grown up before settling down. Yet so many people showed us hatred and distain. We soon found that most of the world was like that. Except the swooning girl who wanted a 'bad boy' in their life. Fun to see there reaction. When they found I was a nerd." He laughed as if remember a long forgotten dream.

For moment I don't most forgotten that in that room at that moment we were sworn enemies or at least as far as he knew. Instead of the horrid tension I felt as I fought Rotted I felt comfortable as if in the presence of a dear, old friend. In the spur of the moment, I almost moved my hair away from my face so I could see my friend better. But, I knew better than to do that and give away my secret identity to someone who I wasn't sure would attack me at this moment. Then again, I never was the brightest girl in the bunch.

I shakily stood to my feet and turned to face him.

His eyes that had been full of anger the first time I walked into the cell had suddenly changed to a soft and almost frightened appearance. For a few moments a scowl appeared on his face, then it was replaced by confusion and then thousand other motions washed over his face.

For a while I thought he was paralyzed perhaps in shock or perhaps the idea that he'd had Night Rider in his grasp the whole time.

"I want to kill you." He sighed looking down. Of course I hadn't been expecting that.

"Reuben-"

"Yet," he interrupted. "I need you."

I knelt down beside him as he turned his face to me. Tears carved their way through dirt and old blood scabs. He seamed hesitant for a moment, but soon gave in and fell into my arms. He sobbed and clung to me like he really had killed Night Rider. Like he had killed me.

"The first day I meet you- in the janitor closet- I knew you were special-" he blubbered. "But not this amazing."

I smiled softly into his hair as he began to calm from his cry.

"We tried to find you," I sighed.

Reu turned to me. "Pardon?"he sniffled.

"The day the pod landed my friends and I jumped out to breath the fresh air. Hypno Eyes and his brother climbed out next. We began to argue about what to do with the pod and where to go. Eventual Hypno Eyes began to threaten he'd just explode the pod if we didn't back off. So we ran. I'm sorry."

Before he could reply Mark raced down in his costume. "Night Rider! We hav-"

He paused outside the door and lowered his voice. "-ve a problem."

"Well spit it out!" I snapped.

"Oh no," muttered Reuben. "They've risen."

"Who?" I demanded.

"His villainous friends." Mark growled.

"And they'll be coming here first to free me... and destroy you." Reuben shook.
