As Meredy was following Lyon and Sherria, she heard a voice.
"Meredy!"
Meredy turned around, and saw Jellal walking toward her, an anxious look on his face. "Meredy," he panted, having walked a long way. "Do you want this? I don't...I...I don't have to be free if you don't want me to leave you." Meredy's eyes opened in shock. Jellal had no doubt dreamt that he would be free of his crimes, even if he was in the independent guild.
"Jellal," Meredy laughed. "I'm going to miss you, but you don't deserve running away from the Council. I know you're a kind and honest person and that it...it wasn't you fault that you did those deeds." Jellal was silent. Meredy had never spoken of Ultear as the reason why Jellal was a criminal before.
"And I know you loooooove~ Erza," she teased. Jellal blushed.
"N-No I don't!" he protested.
"Yeah, you can fool just about anyone with that blushing face of yours," Meredy snorted, amused. Jellal remained silent.
"But really Meredy," Jellal said, still worried. "I don't want to leave you alone. You can't be the only member of Crime Sorcière! We created that guild for a reason. I don't want you to have the guilt and the pain of all of our past wrong deeds. You don't deserve that! Ultear said that you-" he cut himself off, silently cursing himself.
"Ur said...what?" Meredy questioned cautiously. Jellal waved it off like it was nothing and continued talking.
"Meredy. If you really can't handle it...I'll gladly come back for you, within a heartbeat. Please-"
Meredy laughed sadly. "You big ex-criminal fluffball of niceness," she giggled. "Don't you dare lose this chance of freedom just for me. You deserve this. And-" she frowned and squinted up at him. "Are you saying I can't handle taking down a dark guild?" Jellal opened his mouth- he wasn't a fluffball, whatever that was-! "I can do this, Jellal. Have faith in me."
Meredy couldn't believe herself. She was kind of proud. Just at the meeting, before her meeting with the Ice Make mage and the Sky God Slayer mage, she was whining to herself that she didn't want to let Jellal go. Only to realize, while she met the duo of strange wizards, that she was being selfish, and that she should gladly let Jellal to his freedom.
And she was doing that right now.
Meredy, you kind of rock, she mentally thought to herself.
"Are you sure? I'll only go if you want me to. But...I would feel guilty, and-" Meredy grabbed his shoulders and shook him. "M-Meredy?" Jellal said, as she shook him aggressively.
"No," Meredy said sternly. "Don't 'Meredy' me and think I'm a child. Jellal, you can make your own decisions. And if you still refuse? You butt. Fine. HAVE YOUR FREEDOM, YOU BUTT. YOU STUBBORN, EX-CRIMINAL, FLUFFBALL OF NICENESS BUTT." Jellal blinked.
"I'm a fluffy butt?" he asked, confused.
"Something along those lines."
Jellal rubbed his temple with the palms of his hands. "Are you sure? I'm not going to abandon you-"
Meredy nodded. "Go on," she said sweetly. "You deserve this. It's better that I go through this. Who knows, maybe I'll be even stronger than you!"
Jellal sighed. "All right," he said, smiling. "Make sure you banish that dark guild, whatever they are."
Meredy smiled. "Got it!" she said happily, then ran in the direction she last glimpsed Lyon and Sherria.
