Untouched

"We gotta move now." I told the new comer. He shook his head in agreement. "You an I will go find a secure location and come back for 'im once we found it." Shawn offered. I nodded in agreement. "Daryl, wake up." I whispered. His eyes fluttered open. "Hell no." he said. I looked at him questioningly. "You ain't goin' wit this guy without me. Hell no." he explained. I laughed. "I'll come right back. I have my weapons and this guy saved your ass." I said a bit agitated.

A few minutes later Shawn and I walked out of the shed with weapons drawn and Daryl still pissed at the prospect. "He'll get over it." I said with confidence.

About an hour of running around ducking behind bushes and buildings, we came to an old factory complex with a daycare on campus. Shawn went to the front and I went to the back. I had to break a small window in the door to gain access. I entered and searched all the rooms. The place looked untouched by the war for survival that had been waged three years ago.

There were still toys in baskets lining shelves on the walls. Childrens artwork still hung proudly on the doors. There was a small blonde doll laying in a wooden cradle. Her dress still laid with precision. "Some things can stay pure." I thought as I reached the front door and let Shawn in.
"This place is perfect." I stated. He looked around and nodded. "How are we gonna get 'im here? He can't walk it. He'd slow us down and we'll all get caught." Shawn said. "We are not leaving him!" I yelled angery. "I wasn't suggesting that. I was thinking we should get a vehicle." he explained calmly. "Wow Lilly. What the hell is wrong with you?" I asked myself. "I'm sorry." I apologized. He just nodded and walked out to a minivan in the parking lot. After tinkering under the dash for a few minutes, he sat up. "Battery's dead." he stated. I looked around a bit and ran for a silver suv in the next parking lot. I popped the hood and disconnected the battery in a few seconds. Shawn installed it in the van and climbed back under the dash. It suddenly came to life. He jumped in the drivers seat and yelled, "Come on. We gotta do this quick."

He drove like a maniac and within ten minutes, he pulled the van to a stop in the yard of the shed. I jumped out and said to the shut doors, "Daryl, it's me, open up." He opened the doors still looking angry and I ushered him quickly to the van. Once inside, Shawn took off again.
"Bout time." Daryl glared at me. "You can stay pissed if you want, but, it had to be done." I said very matter of factly. I then turned a sarcastically sweet smile in his direction and finished, "Happy you woke up sunshine." He just scoffed in response.

We guided Daryl into the daycare and Shawn took the van several blocks away in case someone had seen us in it. As soon as I locked the door, I tried the tap out of curiosity. It worked. "Yes! Water works and there's a shower." I exclaimed as I looked at Daryl. "I ain't takin' a shower now woman." he said firmly. "Daryl, I can't patch you up if I can't see what needs patchin'. Now hop in." I ordered. He reluctantly agreed. A quick few minutes later he came out wearing his pants and only his vest. His hair still dripping water down his chest and stomache. "Stop staring Lil. Stop drooling!" "K doc." he chided bringing me out of my trance. I sat in front of him and pulled the vest to the side to get a good look at the swelling around his ribs. There was a deep gash across it. "We need to get some peroxide and ointment on that." I said outloud as I searched the backpack. After bandaging him again, I grabbed the fresh clothes I had and retreated to the shower myself.

A few minutes later and I pulled on the new clothes. The jeans were a bit tighter than I expected but the sweater was huge. So big it kept falling off my one shoulder. "Oh well, it works. Nothing better than being clean and shaved in fresh clothes." I thought happily. I walked out and Shawn was back. He and Daryl looked deep in conversation. I cleared my throat and both snapped their heads in my direction. "Anyone want to help me find some blankets or something to keep warm?" I asked tensely. "Sure preppy." Daryl answered and Shawn stood and started searching the classrooms to the right.

Daryl followed me into a classroom and I shut the door. "The hell?" he said turning towards me. "Why did you have my underwear on your bike?" I asked softly. "What are ya on 'bout now girl?" he acted confused. "Do you remember the men holding up pink lacy underwear and asking where your lady friend was?" I stepped towards him. He sighed and looked towards the ground. "I found 'em on Bob that day by the fence. I don't know why, but, it pissed me off." he answered. I was shocked. "On Bob?" I repeated. He just nodded. "What a perv!" I noted. I walked over and stretched up to kiss Daryl on the cheek. Then I started going through cabinets and such looking for blankets. "Wha's tha' fer?" he asked. I smiled at him. "It's a kiss. It's done in appreciation. It was a sweet thing you said." I explained. He looked away quickly though I could still see his cheeks getting a little pink.

That evening, as we were all sitting on our makeshift beds eating food directly from the cans, Shawn spoke for the first time since he got back. "Can ya tell me 'bout yer group?" he asked me. "Daryl's better at telling you that. I'm pretty much a new comer myself." I answered passing the question. "Wha ya want ta know?" Daryl asked. "Who's the leader? What are they like? Do any of ya's expect new comers to do things that are immoral?" Shawn fired at him. "Rick's the leader. He's an ex-sheriff and a father. He's kind, but, don't cross 'im. Immoral? Nah, not unless it's deserved." Daryl finished.

We saw light being shined in the windows and quickly gathered our belongings and blankets and headed for a storage closet in the back of the building. It was barely big enough to handle Daryl and I let alone Shawn. Shawn was a big guy. But, we all packed ourselves in it. Standing, Daryl and I were chest to chest and Shawn's back was pressed hard into us.

"What's that?" Daryl asked as he lifted the locket around my neck with his finger. "It's a locket I found at the house with the family." I explained. "Make out later, I hear voices." Shawn hushed us. Shawn was peeking out a crack in the door and I was holding my breath. I looked up at Daryl and was staring right into his eyes again. "Why are his eyes so blue? Can't he keep 'em shut or somethin'? I don't like feeling these butterflies." I was thinking.

"Well Bill, anything?" I heard the woman ask. "Nope. But, the shower's still wet. They were definitely here." a man responded. "Who's this they? The only one I know about is Shawn." another man inquired. "Shawn don't wear pink lacey panties or drive a motorcycle with damn condoms in it." the first man spit. I had to stiffle a laugh. I grabbed Daryl's vest with both hands and shoved my face in his chest. Shawn muttered under his breath, "Nice man." "Well, let's search the campus. I want my toy back." the woman finished.

A few minutes later, they were gone. "Toy?" Daryl scoffed. "Condoms" Shawn scoffed back. I couldn't contain it. I cracked. I laughed under my breath. "I'll go watch for them to leave. You two stay here." Shawn finished as he shut the door to the storage room.
