Evan's P.O.V.
I slammed my locker shut and headed to Coach Riley's room. I hurried down the hallways, smiling at someone every once in a while."Hey, do you know where the cross country coach is?" A girl came walking up beside me.
"Yes. I happen to be going there myself." I eyed her over. She was cute, with blue-gray eyes that seemed to glow, and hair that was naturally raven black, and wasn't straightened or curled, but hung in tight kinks to her shoulders. When she smiled, a dimple appeared on her right cheek. She had a little bit of mascara on, but nothing else. Her clothes surprised me as well. She was wearing a dress that was knee-length, and looked adorable on her. It was covered in little blue and red flowers.
I brought myself from staring at her, and asked, "So, are you new here?" She nodded.
"I just moved here from Minnesota."
"Was it nice there?" I turned to the right towards the coach's room.
"Yeah. By the way, I'm Robin. Robin Halls." She rubbed her nose and sneezed.
"Bless you. I'm Evan Day." I opened the door for her. She thanked me, and once she entered the room with me behind her, my friend, Rob Patrick, whistled.
"Congratulations! You just managed to get a girlfriend!"
Robin grinned, her cheeks rising to a rosy pink. I shook my head. "No, Rob. We just met."
"Love at first sight! Haha!" He grabbed his bag to go change and on the way out punched me on the shoulder. Robin looked up at me, trying not to laugh.
"That was Rob. He...likes to joke around alot."
She nodded, then set her things down on a desk. Coach Riley came over.
"Well, have you brought someone else onto the team, Day?" He smiled at Robin.
"Yes. This is Robin Halls. She just moved here."
Robin smiled. "Hi." The coach smiled back.
"Before you change into running attire, I want to ask you a few questions." Riley looked at me. "You can leave now, Day."
I grabbed my running shorts and t-shirt, and hurried to change. When I returned, Robin was in running capris and a tank top. Her curly hair was being wrestled into a ponytail by my older sister, Yvonne.
I noticed for the first time that there was only five girls on the team, and at least fifteen guys. The five were Yvonne, Robin, the twins; Rachel and Leah, and then Faith.
Riley called us to order, and told us what the workout would be. "Today, since we have a meet tomorrow, it will be light. Just do a timed run, guys for forty-five minutes, and girls for forty. Except Robin. I want you to run with the guys. Get to it!" he went to his desk to grade papers, as he taught ninth grade math.
I walked out the door, and onto the sunny grounds. Robin came up beside me.
"Can I run with you? I don't know my way around to well." I nodded, and started to run, my watch going. I usually ran alone, but Robin kept up with me, running comfortably. She wasn't breathing hard, so I said, "You can go faster if you want. The grounds are relatively easy; you just follow the trail." I purposely fell back, and watched Robin pick up her pace.
I looked around me, then dashed into the woods. After running for twenty minutes, deeper into the trees, I stopped. I looked around. No one. I rolled my neck, taking a deep breath. I stuck two fingers down my throat. I gagged and threw up my lunch. I did this one more time to make sure I got it all up, then I wiped my mouth on the inside of my shirt.
I felt more ready now, more energized. I sprinted back out of the woods, and glanced at my watch. I had three minutes left. Enough time to get back to the school.
Yes, I did throw up after every meal. Yes, I know it's bad. No, I don't want to stop. Why? I think you can figure that out.
