The Other Side of Me
Prologue
She was twenty-nine this year, exactly eleven years after she discovered her affinity with her powers. For the past eleven years, her life had consisted of her school, her life, her friends, her Guardians, her kind. She graduated quickly after mastering her powers, and went on to claim the title of the Queen.
Of course, ‘Queen’ was not an appropriate term for their species since they did not rule by royalty, but her post in the ruling council had the same authority.
Her grandmother had passed away a few years ago, but she had been coping well. She was mature now, and she could lead. She was the perfect Faen. The perfect example of what a Faen could be. A perfect example of how a woman like her could be such a success despite of her background.
But this story is not about her anymore. No.
Her story was over, but it was the start of another’s story. To understand the background of another’s story, we first need to understand what happened in the eleven years after we finally left her.
We left her, sad and lonely, crying and heart-broken for her lost love. It had been a time where she needed the most support, and her Guardian refused to give it to her. Her then-boyfriend had ruthlessly broken up with her, and pushed her towards her other Guardian.
Zane had, from that moment onwards, taken care of every aspect that made her life. She began to warm her heart entirely to Zane, but part of her never forgot Noel, never forgot the warmth he would always give, the shield of protection. She gave Zane a chance –truly tried to.
But afterwards, the stress was too much for her. She broke up with him for entirely different reasons, and stayed single afterwards. She took a few more boyfriends as time passed, but none of them replaced the place of her Guardians’ role in her heart.
Now twenty-nine, she was made to face a choice. In one more year, she would have to make an instantaneous choice of her life partner for the rest of her life. She would not be forced if she was just another woman in her community, but it was important for her, for she was the head of her kind.
She understood it perfectly well.
Therefore, on the day when she would finally choose her husband, before the audience of the entire council, as well as the vampire council members who were also concerned of the future of the Faen’s council, she stood from her seat at the head of the table.
She walked towards the two men, kneeling and bowed before her, waiting to be chosen. Both of them wished that she chose the other, for they had both seen how in love she had been with both of them. They watched as she walked towards them, the tears in her eyes. They knew the forced choice hurt her; and they wished she would just give up and not choose between them. They both loved her too much to force her to choose.
They could share; they wagered. They knew it would be hard, but they both loved her so much that they would be able to bear with the other. Besides, they had to work hand in hand to protect her now that she held a higher authority than she first had.
But she didn’t choose either of them. She turned and walked towards where the Vampire Council Members were. She took the hand of one of the vampires and led him gently back to her seat. The surprise was in everyone’s face, the immense shock written so clearly upon her two Guardians that loved her.
She smiled gently at her chosen that day, fingers lightly touching his cold cheek. None of her Guardians knew it, but this vampire had been there for her since Day 1 that she left both her Guardians. He had been supporting her quietly, silently, not wishing for anything more other than just to make up to her for everything that he once did to her.
Over eleven years, she began to love him. They let no one know, but they loved each other quietly in their silent, unspoken way. Now that he was a formal member on the Vampire Council, she could take him officially. She could take an excuse to make a union between vampire and Faen. But it would just be a lie.
Her chosen stood before the entire Faen Council that they and gave her such a loving smile that no one could deny their love. They shared a kiss, deep and passionate. She knew the scene would stay forever in the minds of her two Guardians who loved her so, but she could not help it. She could no longer stand being pushed around between the two of them. She wanted someone who would claim her for his own, to be selfish in his entire way of owning her.
When their lips parted that day, she held a bright smile and held him close to her. She didn’t know how her future with a vampire like him would turn out, but she guessed she would have to take things step by step. She guessed she would have to see how it goes. And hope that her future would be bright.
“I, Ashe Alveron, take him, Kenton Darkness, son of Favian and Zephyra Darkness, Member of the Vampire Council, as my partner and husband.” She announced to her Council, meeting extremely shocked silence in reply. But she didn’t care if she got no support from her members. She loved him.
The only form of cheers came from Treyon Darkness, Kenton’s twin brother, as well as Alaric Darkness, Kenton’s uncle. They were the only ones who cheered. Even Favian and Zephyra could not believe what the ruler of the Faen’s Council had just done. They had never hoped that Kenton would fall in love with Ashe, or the other way around. But somehow, the two adults had made some feeling between the both of them.
“And I, Kenton Darkness, take her, Ashe Alveron, Faen’s Child and Head of the Faen’s Council, as my partner and wife.” Kenton announced proudly, holding his fiancée now. They shared another kiss, and amidst the silence that left in their wake, they left the hall to spend their twosome time.
That is the start of this story that is going to be written. Ashe’s marriage was the start of yet another story.
A story of friendship, betrayal, and painful realization.
