Chapter 3

Waking up hurt more than I could remember and the funniest thing was that my brain actually thought I had conked out because of excessive alcohol. At least, that was what my brain first told me, before I tried to move, and realize that every part of me hurt, as if there was something squashing me and preventing me from moving any limbs at all.

There was a dull throbbing on my left shin, and I felt some sort of material binding around it tightly and it probably meant that my leg was injured somehow.

Opening my eyes, I found myself staring up at an unfamiliar ceiling. Was this the hotel that we were supposed to be at? Had I conked out so hard on the car that I somehow hurt myself and had to be carried all the way here? It didn’t really seem possible, right? True, I was drunk when I got in the car, but I was fairly sure I hadn’t taken enough to knock me out so dead.

Something kept pricking my skin, and I tried to move my hands to rub away the prickling, and though the movement told me exactly how heavy my hand felt, it did nothing to chase away the annoying prickling on my skin.

My little movement must have caught some sort of attention, because I heard the sound of chair legs scraping along the floor, then my sister’s worried face came into my vision, peering down at me.

Relieved that there was a familiar face, ready to tell me whatever that had just happened, I smiled softly, feeling as the movement pulled laboriously on my facial muscles. Either I was having a really terrible hangover, or someone had hit me in the head with a baseball bat, because it sure felt like it.

“Are you okay, Raun? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? In pain?” Ashe asked worriedly, and I wondered how long had she been waiting for me to come to. This was her second day as a married woman –right? –and she shouldn’t be wasting it sitting here, waiting for me to wake up. If she had spent her entire first night of being married here with me, then Kenton would kill me for stealing their nuptial night.

“I feel perfectly fine, Sis.” I lied, trying to sit up, but finding that I couldn’t muster enough energy to. I guess lying down would have to work. “What happened though? I can’t remember anything after I got in the car. Where is this?”

“You’re at the School of Cynus. We had you airlifted here because this is where we can keep you best under observation. We were attacked on the road back to the hotel by men who wanted to hunt down Kenton. Our limo managed to escape the explosion, but your car went straight into the line of fire. You guys rolled down a hill, and Noel had to drag you out the wreckage before the car blew up.”

Wow. That was a lot to take in. I didn’t seem to remember most of it. It was just one black hole where the memory should be… I mean, you would remember the sensation of rolling down a hill in a car filled with people right? It probably felt like a washing machine in there.

“That sounds… kind of fun.” I joked, trying to lift my worried sister’s spirits since she looked really close to tears at the moment. I never liked Ashe crying, and though I was the younger brother here, I had made it a personal promise to make whoever who made Ashe cry pay.

“Stop joking around! I was worried like hell about you!” Ashe punched me lightly on the arm, smiling a little. At least I was well enough to joke around, eh?

“Where’s my favorite brother-in-law? He’s not here?”

“I’m your only brother-in-law, Raun. You must have hit your head pretty bad, huh?” Kenton’s voice interrupted us, and I watched as he walked into view.

“Hey, bro. Sorry for stealing your limelight yesterday. I was feeling a little ignored at the party, so I figured, ‘Hey, why don’t I get seriously injured and show Kenton that Ashe cares more for than she does him?’” I raised my hands up weakly for a fist bump, which he did gently while laughing at my joke.
