Chapter 1

Today is the biggest day of my sister’s life. It is almost the biggest day of my parent’s life. It is the day I officially lose my sister to another man.

I may be already seventeen, but I could not help but feel a little sad that Ashe was going to leave this family, and make another family. It did not help that I barely knew this guy that she was engaged to. My parents had been upset initially –too –to have Ashe come back, springing a surprise on us, then telling us that she was getting married. Her fiancé arrived the next evening, and though he looked every sort of the handsome, charming and charismatic man that was totally my sister’s type, I could tell there was something off about him.

I mean, he looked too pale to even be healthy, and there was something wrong in those red eyes. I mean, how many people had red eyes? He insisted it was the colored contacts when Mum asked, but I could make out clearly the difference between colored contacts and natural eye color. And much as it was almost impossible to say, this guy had natural red eyes. Those were eyes that would make a child have nightmares; the eyes that lurked underneath the bed as ‘monsters under the bed’.

Dad got very suspicious about why their marriage was so rushed, and thought that Ashe was carrying their child. It was kind of funny to see Dad fuming at Kenton while Ashe tried to assure that she was not pregnant. Dad even had her take a pregnancy test immediately to prove her point, at which I saw my future brother-in-law smirk in amusement at.

Though I heard him whisper something terribly suggestive to her after the entire scene died down when Dad was out of earshot, getting Ashe blushing red like a tomato.

Of course, when Ashe came, she came with her two other boyfriends, Noel and Zane. For a period of time, Mum had been very upset when she found out that Ashe and Noel had broken up, and been slightly guarded when Ashe and Zane dated. Afterwards, they had broken up, but the two of them stayed by Ashe’s side nonetheless. I always believed strongly that one day Ashe would marry either of them; so the popping up of this guy Kenton was definitely a bad shock for me.

I didn’t know if I wanted to call Kenton a surprise yet, since I barely knew him at all.

Still, Ashe seemed really happy to be around him –maybe even more than she had been around Noel –so I tried my best to accept him into our family. Kenton tried to make up for the time that we did not spend together by asking me to bring him around town while Mum and Ashe spazzed over what she would wear for her wedding day. Since he was already engaged to my sister, I guessed I had to accept him no matter what. After spending a day with him, helping him choose out his suit for the wedding and getting a few more whatnot for their marriage, I figured he was pretty cool.

He had an easygoing character, but seemed to serious at times. He did have some sort of quaint medieval slang in him between times, but he was generally humorous, though I had to note that it would be easy to imagine him in anger, in a cold, aloof exterior. He stuck stubbornly to his all-black get up while spending his time with us, and it gave off the impression that he could be that ‘cold, dark and handsome man’ if he really wanted to be.

Our neighbor Kaz came over with his wife to congratulate Ashe, and they spent some time catching up. In the name of being Ashe’s old crush, he spent some time with Kenton, as if he were trying to make him jealous of the time they used to spend together when they were young. Somehow, though, Kenton didn’t seem jealous at all, and I overheard Kaz telling my sister that she had hooked on to a good man, and bade for her to hold him tight.

Two weeks passed in a blink of an eye, spent with my sister rushing around to get her own wedding out right. My mum was the perfect wedding planner, but the fact that the person being married off was her daughter made her twice more frantic than any professional wedding planner should be. Future brother-in-law was wise enough to camp out in my room during this period while they were panicking, staying out of their way. Dad also sought refuge in my room between times, and the three of us often ended up on the game station in my room or watching football together.
