One Month Later

A few weeks pasted and nothing really happened, Daryl and I went on multiple runs together and at times brought more people. I loved helping provide for the community, it made me feel like I was really accepted and I think for the first time I could finally trust people again. Along the way there have been only a couple accidents; Glenn slipped down a hill he wanted to hike on and knocked himself unconscious, Carol cut her hand really bad on a hunting knife, Carl fell into manmade walker trap and didn't get out till a day later, even I accidentally ran into a tree which made me cut my face on the arrow I was loading into my bow. Each time someone got hurt it scared me senseless, which caused me to ether panic or just somehow know how to help before we got back to see Hershel. He told me I would make a great nurse.

When Daryl and I would go out on runs or raids we always ended up talking about our lives before all this happened. We could talk for hours and still get what we needed. Our relationship got stronger and I actually really liked it. At one point I just flat out asked him if he was my biological father to which he chuckled, tussled my hair and said that he wished.

After week from our last run we were sent out again to hopefully bring back more. Our last raid was so successful that we thought we would hit the same area again. Daryl showed me where it was on the map, a small little secluded community about thirty miles away. We were eventually able to get a system down of how long we needed to get there, collect stuff and make it to shelter before we lost sunlight. We tried to carry supplies in the dark but we ended up losing half our stuff in a river we fell into. To make our bags lighter we didn't pack any shelter or bedding, we just assumed there would be some there since it was a community.

Daryl and I walked along the side of the highway, surrounding us were cars that didn't make it out. In pretty much each one there was a walker still inside. It was almost depressing how many people didn't even get the chance to make it out of the city alive.

"These walkers is starvin' so they gonna walk slower then most. We shouldn't run into any problems with 'em" Daryl assured me seeing the nervousness in my eyes when we walked into a more heavily populate area. We made our way along the main roads and were eventually able to get on some back roads where we could hide easily. As we walked we came across a car that had its doors left wide open and on further inspection had the keys in the driver's side seat. I started it up and inspected the dash board.

"Daryl, this has over half a tank of gas in it and nothing appears to be wrong with it." I said stepping into the driver's side and sitting down. I looked behind me and looked for anything that could hurt me. When I couldn't find anything I closed my side's door and cleaned the windshield. Daryl joined me in the passenger's side and shut his door.

"Did ya ever learn how to drive a car?" he turned to me and asked.

"Does sneaking out, stealing one of the workers cars and joy riding all day count?" I asked with a grin on my face.

He grinned as he remarked, "Comon' kiddo, let's go."

I stepped on the gas making my way around broken down cars and walkers. As I drove he flipped through a CD book that was lying on the ground. We talked and laughed until he finally picked a CD and put it in the player. He turned up the radio as the first song came on.

"Metallica?"

"Hell ya Metallica, at least you know who they are."

"I owned a couple of their CDs" I turned to him and saw him grinning even more.

We drove along the road singing and banging on the dashboard to the music we both loved. Before we knew it we were pulling up in front of the community, I pulled up in front of the first house and turned off the car. I put the keys in my pocket and opened the car door.
