Sunlight rose but I was already awake, I only slept for a few hours before waking up but I didn't move, Daryl was still asleep so I didn't bother him, I'm sure he wanted to escape this reality just as much as I wanted to. Soon enough he woke up and saw I was already awake.

"Mornin'." He said in a sleepy voice.

"Hey." I replied back, worn down and miserable I knew I had to begin the hike to the coast. I just hope this plan wouldn't fall though and end badly.

"Ready to start?" he asked me taking his vest back and putting it on.

"Going to have to be."

Daryl pulled out a pack of cigarettes and handed it to me, putting them in my pocket I smiled slightly.

"Cigarette smoke heals the heart." I joked .

"Damn straight." He chuckled back.

Both of us climbing down and looking around we started our walk. First we needed to get out on the road and follow it up as far as it would take us. Walking on the main highway I was dragging my feet, I was exhausted mentally and physically, I could tell Daryl was the same way. We walked at a much slower pace than usual. Looking around I saw most of the cars that were left on the highway were ether looted or destroyed.

"Well, don't think were gonna get much out here." Daryl said looking around like I was.

"We need more supplies." We were constantly looking for things to get us by.

"I know." Was all he said. "Let's try to get 30 miles up the road 'til sundown."

I nodded and kept walking. Occasionally we would see a walker on the side of the road or in a car but we didn't bother with it, unless they were coming after us we didn't go after them, I don't think either of us could have taken it.

The sun rose higher but luckily it didn't get too hot, my clothes were still covered in blood but none of it mine which I had to be grateful for.

"Fuckin' starving." Daryl said, I don't even know how long we were walking for.

"Same."

"Let's take a break." He said pulling his backpack off and sitting on a guard rail.

"Thank God." I was tired and hungry. I did the same as him and sat down on the ground. Digging in his bag he found two cans of veggies with a can opener. Opening them both for us he handed one over to me along with a plastic fork. I took one bite after another really just enjoying the break from walking. I moved over toward him and leaned against his legs resting my head on his knee.

"Tired?" he asked me.

"Yes."

"I know kiddo, me too." His voice was soft which brought me comfort.

We sat there for while, both of us just eating in silence. After we were done we stood back up, looking around for anything to help us. Coming up empty we continued walking, Daryl in front of me. Further up the road we came to a car crash the blocked the whole road.

"Someone drove the wrong way off of an exit ramp." I investigated. Five cars were completely totaled causing cars front and back to be abandoned.

"Be careful, don't know what stayed 'round." Daryl warned me.

I followed his lead how to get around the wreck, crawling over car hoods and avoiding broken glass that was everywhere. We just about made it around the wreck until I was tripped. Falling face first onto the concrete I yelled for help. Frantically turning my head I saw a walker had grabbed my ankle and was shimming out from under a car.
