Looking over the community once again the coast was clear. Dad was finishing up repairs on the fence when I walked over to him.
"What'ya think? Look good?" he asked me standing up and stretching his back.
"Looks amazing, I think it's going to hold." I assured him smiling.
Walking around for days we ended up stumbling across a small fully gated neighborhood. It started out as a simple raid but when we saw that it was nearly clear of walkers we decided to try and call it home. Raiding the grocery story only a few blocks away we found a huge supply of dry and canned foods which turned into a life savor. Taking a big risk by trying to save this place paid off.
"Ready ta go home?" Dad asked snapping me back into reality.
I simply smiled and started on the walk with him right beside me.
We shared a simple two floor house with two bedrooms, we didn't want too much space but figured if this was going to be home we might as well be happy with it. My room was stock piled with books I could find and carry home, making it my new collection to seem a little more normal. Dad's room was bare except for a mattress and a closet but I figured he didn't really care. We didn't have much from our old camp so any clothes that we had we found along the way. We were always in need for weapons, by now half our arrows had snapped in half or were lost. More times than others we just used hunting knives since bullets were always hard to find. Days seemed to drag on with only one hoard scare the whole time we had been here but we made it work.
Walking into our house I threw my backpack onto the floor and sat down on the couch.
"God I stink, what I wouldn't give for a shower about now." I complained smelling myself, I was always sticky with sweat and dirt. My hair had grown out so long I just didn't like it anymore so when I found a pair of scissors I hacked off as much as I could but I didn't change the fact how greasy it was. Usually I just settled with tying it back and tried to forget how uncomfterable it always felt.
"Aint that bad, least of our prob'ems"
I just chuckled under my breath and kicked off my shoes, I could never get used to this not knowing what the true time was during the day. I didn't even know what month it was anymore.
"Hungry kiddo?" dad asked pulling out some cans for dinner.
"Eh, not really. I think Im going to lay down for a little bit, I'm exhausted."
"Night kiddo."
"Night dad."
Walking up the stairs to my room I shut the door behind me when something felt really off. Looking around I noticed that the window was open when I had never done it. I didn't even know that the window could open, I guess that I never checked. Too tired to really care I just closed it and threw myself onto the bed.
I woke up to dad holding his hand over my mouth and making the signal to keep quite. Still dazed and confused from just waking up I really didn't know what to do. Sitting up I saw that he had a hunting knife in his hand, removing his hand from my mouth I whispered asking what was going on.
"Walkers got in, whole community is swarmed. Don't know how it happenen' we gotta get outta here." Dad whispered back in a hoarse voice.
I nodded and scrambled to get my shoes on before we opened my bedroom door and headed down the stairs. Walkers had gotten into our house, and were headed straight for us, dad swiftly stabbed each one in the head and kicked their bodies to the side. I pulled on my backpack and waited to get out the door.
