“Hello ma’am.” I said, smiling timidly at my Grandmother. “Grandma, this is my boyfriend Zayn. Zayn, this is my Grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Lynn.”
“Nice to meet you Mrs. Lynn.” Zayn smiled, shaking her hand. We sat around her brunch table while her maid brought out our preserved plates.
“So, Zayn. Have you gone to college? What do you expect to do with your life after your fame runs out? I told Rain that she needs to go to college but she ignored my wishes.”
“I have not. I am saving up. If this doesn’t work out at any point I can always go back.” Zayn answered. I slide my hand into his under the table and gave him a squeeze.
“And your religious preferences?”
“I am Muslim. But Rain and I have discussed it. Neither of us mind either way.”
“And what do you think you’re going to do with your children? No child should be confused about God.”
“Grandma!” I said, finally breaking into the interrogation.
“What? It is a fair question.”
“Our children will be raised to love and respect God. How they chose to worship will be up to them once they are old enough to decide. Until then they can practice both.” I said with finality.
“Your world view is a fairytale.” She sniffed, but dropped the subject. “So how long until you propose to my granddaughter?”
“We will be together for a year on tour. If all goes well, at the end of the tour she and I will talk about it.” Zayn answered. I stiffened at her question.
“I want to be together for at least a year.” I said firmly.
“I can deal with that. You are planning on having children?”
“At least two. I know I’ll want more but that’s up to her.” Zayn said, smiling over at me.
“Just don’t wait too long. I want to see my great-grandchildren.” She said, pushing her seat back and standing up. “I am tired. Make sure you call me occasionally.”
I followed her to the front door with Zayn behind me. I let out a huge breath when the door closed behind us.
“Oh thank God.” I sighed.
“That wasn’t so bad.” Zayn laughed, kissing the side of my head.
“I don’t know how you handled that. Thank you.” I said sincerely, kissing him firmly.
I drove us back to the bus, collapsing on the bed, emotionally drained. “How did it go?” Becs called.
“Good. Tired. Sleep now. Wake for concert.” I muttered, burying myself into the sheets. It felt like moments later that Hails was jumping on my matress.
“Come one girlie. The boys are almost done, we need to get you into makeup.” Becs said, dragging me into the venue and shoving me into the dressing room. Lou, the boy’s stylist came in to fix me up while Lewis worked to find the perfect outfit. Both knew about my surprise for Zayn and wanted me to look perfect.
Most of the concert was a blur and soon we reached the end. “So…I actually have a surprise for everyone.” I said, taking my acoustic guitar from Becs. Becs and Hails exited the stage, leaving me to play this song for the first time alone.
“As most know, I started dating Zayn about three months ago. I wrote a single that is being released tonight at midnight. I wrote it for him, because I don’t know how else to say what I need to.” I sighed and refrained from looking off to the side of the stage where Zayn’s eyes bore into me.
Only Exception by Paramore
When I was younger I saw my daddy cry
And curse at the wind.
He broke his own heart and I watched
As he tried to reassemble it.
And my momma swore
That she would never let herself forget.
And that was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love if it does not exist.
But darling,
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
Maybe I know somewhere
Deep in my soul
That love never lasts.
And we've got to find other ways
To make it alone.
Or keep a straight face.
And I've always lived like this
Keeping at comfortable distance.
And up until now I've sworn to myself
That I'm content with loneliness.
Because none of it was ever worth the risk.
Well you are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
You are the only exception.
I've got a tight grip on reality,
But I can't let go of what's in front of me here.
I know you're leaving in the morning
When you wake up.
Leave me with some kind of proof it's not a dream.
Oh-oh-oh-ohhh.
You are the only exception. [x4]
You are the only exception. [x4]
And I'm on my way to believing.
Oh, and I'm on my way to believing.
