Very young I was
When I learned of life
The cruelties it brings
The pain it inflicts
Of only eight years
I learned betrayal of trust
Betrayal from a parent
Who was meant to love
The one I called father
Hurt me everyday
And no one I told
Because I was afraid
My mind and my body he broke
Bending them to his will
Never to fight
Never to speak ill
But I endured
Through the pain
I found happiness
In the smallest of places
Twelve years I had
Once I found courage
With strength I spoke
Of my father's misdeeds
In my mother I confided
Hoping she would help
Hoping she would side with me
But she turned the other cheek
She labeled me a liar
Saying attention was all I seeked
In her actions I learned
Love has conditions
You must obey
You must be good
Be the best you can be
And they'll love you
My heart she broke that day
My will wasted
My happiness hanging by a thread
But I endured
I found people who liked me
Those I called friends
Eventually I found someone
I loved more than a friend
In him I confided
To him I would seek refuge
But my fight was not his to face
He could only watch as my life twisted and turned
At seventeen I fell
Crumbling and breaking
Losing all that I had
Which gave me hope
