Chapter 24 (Zach)Pulling up in front on my house I cut off the ignition to my car and just sat there for a moment. Marissa was just feet from me cuddled up with my shirt bunched in her hands, sleeping soundlessly. Remnants of our heated mating still filled the air around us and just the mere thought of possibly losing my mate ate at my insides like battery acid churning through my soul.
I will not lose her, I silently proclaimed to myself. It was a vow, a promise that I was determined to see through. Marissa was my light, my heart and without her I had nothing. Knowing what it was that I had to do now I let out a deep breath and went to open the door.
“Zach” the small voice called out to me, filling me with an exhilaration that had my heart singing to the heavens. A feeling that I was bound and determined to hold on to at all costs for the rest of my natural born life.
Glancing over my shoulders I looked back at a very sleepy yet sensual looking Marissa. Her eyes half lidded and a shy smile on her face made for one hell of a beautiful sight. “Yes” I replied softly wanting to hold her to me and shelter so that no one could ever harm her in any way again.
“Where are we?” she asked her voice sounding groggy and sleep filled.
I glanced up at the house and then looked back to my mate. Unable to stop myself I reached out and brushed her cheek with the back of my hand reveling in the delicate feeling of her skin. Skin that was soft as satin and smooth as silk
“We’re at my house.” I told her simply. I had not gone into many details with her yet about what I was planning and for a bit longer I hoped that she would remain oblivious. Oblivious to what was yet to happen and the ramifications if I failed. Clearing my throat louder than necessary I added with a sliver of a smile, “Hold on and I’ll come get you out. Then you can rest in my bed.”
“Okay” she replied softly instantly closing her eyes once again. Shaking my head, I chuckled at the sight. She was a picture of innocence personified in my own eyes. Turning around this time I did get out of the car and walked around to open her door. Reaching in I lifted my mate holding her to my chest and inhaled her scent, taking in the rich spiciness of her heat. For a moment I let it roll over me imbedding itself permanently into my pores. Mine, my wolf whispered in supreme satisfaction. My mate.
I couldn’t agree more and because of that my resolve had been firmly set on what I was getting ready to do. Challenge my father for the Alpha title. Without that title I had no due cause to call for a Macto against Sergio.
When I walked into the house all was quiet. I knew that mom and dad were home as well as Stevie and Amy. I could easily pick out all four of their scents in different locations of the house. But my first priority was always my mate.
Careful not to wake Marissa because I knew the toll that that the heat would take on her I moved stealthily up the steps to my room. Pulling the covers back I laid her down and tucked the covers around her small body. A soft sigh escaped her lips but her eyes never once opened. Feeling confident that she was lost in her dreams I leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead, savoring the small taste before regrettably pulling back. For just a moment I remained, taking in her grace and elegance, locking it away in a special place of my memory as I prepared for my next task.
If I had the choice I would crawl in that bed and hold on to my mate, hold on to her tightly never letting her go. But sadly, I didn’t. Not yet at least. I needed to secure our future. It was going to be a tough road but one that I was more than willing to travel when both of our futures and the future of our pups hinged on the outcome.
