"Wait, so you're telling me that not only did Scott cheat on you, but with your ex- boyfriend, who also cheated on you?" I tried believing it, but in my heart I knew there was no way Scott cheated, he had liked Mitch too long and too much to throw it all away like this.
"It doesn't make sense," Avi began, looking over at me with concern," I'm sure it was just a misunderstanding. We will figure this out." We pulled into the parking lot and I asked Avi to stay with Mitch while I talked to Scott. "Please, I won't take long. I think we need to hear the other side of this story, and without Mitch present Scott might be more inclined to tell me the truth."
I walked into the building preparing my speech in my head. There is no way my two best friends are ending like this. I won't allow it. "SCOTT RICHARD HOYING YOU BETTER HAVE ONE HECK OF AN EXPLANATION-"
"Kirstie please help. I cheated on Mitch and I know he saw me and I don't know what to do, all I know is I really want to stay together but he doesn't want to, and ...." Scott sank into a chair and began sobbing hysterically. I walked over and began rubbing his back. Even though I was mad at him for cheating on Mitch, I was still his friend too. "What do you think he will do?" Startled by the question, I thought carefully before answering, so I couldn't be held accountable if what I was going to say was wrong.
"I can't be sure, but first off I need to know how it happened." Scott looked up at me, eyes brimming with tears about to fall out. He managed to pull it together, and began to recount the story.
"I was at home, Mitch had just left to go to the store, and I heard the doorbell ring. So I got up and looked through the peephole to see Chris." He paused, taking a long breath before starting back up. " I opened the door just enough to be able to talk to him but not allow him in, and asked him why he was there. He said he needed to drop off some of Mitch's stuff he found when he was packing, and then asked if he could come in." A single, dramatic tear fell from Scott's left eye. "I let him in thinking it will be a quick thing, 5 minutes tops. I let him in, and closed the door. As I turned back around, Chris lunged at me and began trying to make out with me, and I don't know, I just sort of caved. When I let him out I stroked his hair like I'm used too, because I've done that for years. Only out of the corner of my eye I saw Mitch come around the corner and see us, and proceed to run away. After that I kicked Chris out, and came here early and now I am just freaking the heck out." He heaved and I could tell he was beginning to cry again.
"Mitch is hurt really badly you know." Scott nodded, " and you shouldn't be surprised if he ends things." Scott jerked his head up at me when I said this," But," I tried to calm him," I think with enough time, you stand a good chance of being forgiven." He relaxed, but only for a second.
"So there's a high chance this is it?" I slowly nodded, and gave Scott a hug as his body, racked with sobs, fell limp.
"Hey babe, I know you said to stay with him, but I think they need to talk now." I looked up and saw Avi standing slightly in front of Mitch, as if he was protecting Mitch, or the other way around, I can't be sure. "Let's go warm up in another room." I nodded and let go of Scott, and as I passed Mitch I gave his hand a quick squeeze to let him know I was on his side. The expression on his face said so much, but so little about what he was feeling, I didn't know whether to tell security to keep an eye on them or if Mitch would walk out crying and too emotional for rehearsal. "Well it's a good thing we got here early, because Kevin isn't here yet." He waggled his eyebrows at me. " Want to have some fun before we start actually warming up?" I giggled and nodded yes. Avi grabbed my hand and pulled me into a random room.
"Babe, have I ever told you how much I adore you?"
"You may have mentioned it once or twice."
"Mmm well I just did again." We passionately kissed until we heard someone awkwardly cough from the corner.
"As much as you adore each other, I would really love it if you didn't in front of me." We broke apart, mortified, as our cheeks turned tomato red. Kevin grinned sheepishly.
"Well this is more awkward than my high school years." Avi mumbled. I laughed, still bright red. " But let's go I guess!"
CRASH! "Oh no, they must be arguing! Let's go before something happens!" The three of us rush out and to the room we left Scott and Mitch in, as we neared it the voices became louder and louder.
"YOU TOLD ME YOU WOULD NEVER TALK TO HIM!" Mitch screamed, presumably talking about Chris, "AND NOT ONLY DID YOU TALK TO HIM, YOU MADE OUT WITH HIM?!?!?!?! YOU ARE SUCH A JERK WHY DID I THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO DATE YOU? THIS WAS THE SECOND WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!"
Over his yells you could hear Scott pleading with Mitch, "Baby please it was just once, and I promise it won't happen again. I will get a restraining order placed against him! He means absolutely nothing, you hear me? NOTHING!"
"DON'T CALL ME BABY. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS TO TRUST GUYS AFTER HIM? I THOUGHT I COULD TRUST YOU, BECAUSE YOU WERE MY BEST FRIEND! I THOUGHT I COULD DATE YOU AND IT WOULD BE SAFE! I NEEDED TO DATE YOU SO I COULD TRUST AGAIN!"
BANG! Right as we got to the door it flew open, and a livid Mitch stood in front of us, tears streaming from his eyes, and his knuckles bleeding. I saw a dent in the wall and Scott had a bloody nose, as well as a black eye. "Serves him right," I thought. The moment Mitch's eyes met mine, he lost all his fight. His body was limp, and all four of us rushed to catch him. " Don't you even DARE touch him!" I yelled at Scott. "He was your best friend, he deserves better than this!" Since Kevin had Mitch, I started advancing towards Scott, yelling at him increasingly louder.
"HE CONFIDED EVERYTHING IN YOU, SO YOU KNEW EXACTLY HOW HE FELT! I DON'T CARE IF YOU -"
"- We all make mistakes, Kirstie." Scott's eyes were piercing "You should know all about making mistakes." He glanced at Avi and I understood exactly what he had just implied.
"Hoying, you just crossed a line." My voice had grown so cold I could ice hell over. "Now get out of here."
"You can't kick me out."
"No, but you know what can? An unanimous vote. Guys?" I turned to the rest of the group. They looked downright terrified of what I was suggesting. Kevin spoke up first.
"All in favor of a temporary hiatus?" Unfortunately, 3 ayes echoed around the room. Kevin and Mitch were the only to not have voted. "I think it's a good idea, but one month only." His voice echoed around the room.
"...aye." Mitch said hoarsely. "I'm getting out of here." He left, slamming the door. Kevin quickly followed.
"Scott, leave." He complied. "And don't talk to Mitch."
He silently complied. I found myself torn, between chasing after Scott, or going and comforting Mitch. Before I had reached a decision, my thoughts were cut off.
"Kirstie babe, go get Mitch sorted out. We really do not want another repeat of what happened when Chris and he broke up." I turned to see Avi staring at me with an expression of pure compassion on his face. In that moment, I knew that he was the one who needed to be talking to Scott. "Kevin, why don't you come with me?"
Kevin and I simultaneously nodded. "Let's stay in contact with each other though. Mitch can stay at our place tonight, if that is alright Avi?" I asked him, giving him that look where he can never say no.
"Of course. I will see you tonight." He gave me a quick kiss goodbye before following Kevin out the door.
Left alone, I sighed and pulled out my phone. Time to find Mitch.
