Braden's pov:
I don't sleep at all that night. I couldn't. Kelly told me last night that she could never fall for someone on the team, and that includes me.
I'm heartbroken. I shouldn't feel this way, but I just can't deny my feelings anymore.
I'm in love Kelly, and I always have been.
She probably hates me now though. I didn't say 'I love you' back to her last night because I was too upset. But now, I realize that I'm such an idiot and should've said it. Because even if Kelly isn't in love with me, like I am her, she definitely does love me. So why should I just throw away our amazing friendship like that? I gotta fix this.
I jump out of bed and hurry up and get dressed. It's 10am so Kelly should be up by now. I tell my mom I'm going over to her house, and she says 'ok' so I bolt out the door.
It takes me no less than 10 seconds to run across the street and ring the doorbell. Joey answers the door while eating a piece of toast.
"Hey Joe, can I speak to Kelly?"
He takes another bite of his toast, swallows, then answers "Sorry dude. You just missed her. She went down to the fields with Cole, Jaden, Ethan and Zack." He takes another bite "I can tell her you came by though." He says with his mouth full.
"No that's ok. I forgot, I was suppose to go down to the fields with them." I lie "Bye Joe!" I run down the path before Joey even has time to shut the door.
The fields aren't that far, maybe 15 mins away. And if I run, only about 7 mins away.
I get there with time to spare and search the complex for Kelly and the guys.
Just as I'm about to think they aren't here, I see Jaden emerge from behind a dugout.
"Hey, Jaden!" I yell as run in his direction
He looks up "Oh hey, Braden!" He waves me over.
"What's up?" I ask once I reach Jaden
"Oh nothing much. The guys and I brought Kelly down here to cheer her up because she seemed upset when we texted her this morning."
"Upset?" My heart drops, was she sad because of me? "Did she say what was wrong?"
"Nah. She said that she didn't wanna talk about it, and we respected that."
Just then Cole, Zack, Ethan and Kelly come out from behind the dugout and Zack has his arm around Kelly's waist. I grit my teeth.
"Oh hey Braden!" They all say, except for Kelly.
"Hey guys" I say, not even looking at them. I'm too busy focusing on Kelly.. and Zack who still has his arm around her.
"Jaden, did you get Kelly the water she asked for?" asks Cole
"Oh yeah.. I'll be right back!"
Jaden runs off in the direction of the concession stand. Even though it's closed, we found a way to get in there a couple years ago. It's the team's (and Kelly's) little secret.
"So what have you guys been doing?" I ask
"Pretty much just trying to make Kelly laugh, she's just so sad and we don't know why. She'll barely even talk to us and I'm starting to get really worried about her. Do you have any idea why she might be acting this way Braden?" asks Zack, who seems pretty determined to not move his arm.
Kelly's eyes land on me. Her innocent, beautiful, blue eyes stare me down. If looks could kill, I'd be dead.
"Can I talk to her alone?" I ask, hoping to get Zack away from her.
Zack turns to Kelly to make sure it's ok, she nods, and he finally removes his arm from around her waist. Then they all walk towards the concession stand to look for Jaden.
Kelly looks so hurt. Her eyes are red, she was crying. Oh no. Did I do this?
"Kel-Bel, are you ok?" I ask, even though I know she obviously isn't.
"No Braden." She sniffles "Last night, you didn't say 'I love you' back. And you called me 'Kelly' instead 'Kel-Bel'. I love that nickname. And I love when you call me it. So why didn't you say those things last night? Did I do something wrong? If I did, please, let me know. I hate when you're mad at me, it just makes me wanna cry." as she say that last part, she lets out a sob and I pull her in for a hug. She hugs me back.
"Oh my gosh Kel-Bel, no. I'm not mad at you at all! I know, I should've said those things last night and I'm sorry that I didn't. I don't know, I guess I was just too tired and my brain was too sleepy to type the right things." I lie, not wanting her to know the truth "It'll never happen again. Please, don't cry. I don't like it when you're upset, it makes me sad too." I say, with tears rolling down my face.
She looks up and wipes away my tears. Then she smiles and wipes away her own. "You promise that it'll never happen again?" She asks
"Promise." I say, smiling back at her
"Good." She jumps into my arms and hugs me tight. I laugh and hug her as tight as I can, not wanting to let go.
After what seems like only 2 seconds, but I guess it was more like 2 mins, Kelly says "Ok Braden, I'm happy again, you can put me down now" then she laughs
"Oh sorry." I say putting her down. I feel my cheeks turn a bright red.
She notices. "Aww B. Blushing? For me? What a cutie." She stands up on her tippy-toes and kisses my cheek. I think I just might die of happiness.
I smile and she laughs. "Let's go find the guys, especially Zack. He was super worried about me haha he's too sweet." She grabs my hand and we run over to the concession stand.
A million thoughts run through my head, but 3 really big ones stick out:
1) She kissed me. Yeah it was on the cheek, but that's still a kiss. So, does she like me?
2) She called Zack sweet. Does she like him?
3) I wanna punch Zack in the face. I don't know why. I think I'm... jealous.
We arrive at the concession stand and enter through our secret passage way to get inside. Once we're in there, we see the guys, stuffing their faces with chips. Kelly laughs at them because they're acting like true teenage boys. I'm still holding her hand and Zack notices. He comes over and 'steals' her from me by taking her other hand and pulling her aside then asking how she's doing. She doesn't seem to mind. In fact, I think she's blushing.
That's it. I can't take it anymore. I clench my hands into fists and walk over to Zack. Ready to fire.
