I didn't have time to figure this out. Instead I grabbed my sister by her shoulders and rose up into the air. I fell over to the meadow by the bridge and let my sister go gently and she landed on the ground. I lowered into the ground and the ravens flew away.
'Madi!' I exclaimed. 'What were you thinking?'
'I- I- I...' she stuttered. I pulled her into a hug and she choked on her tears.
'Has dad been drinking again?'
She let out a noise that sounded like a mix between a gasp and a yelp. I took it as a yes.
I pulled apart from the hug but kept my hands on her shoulders. I crouched down to her height; she was four years
younger than me.
'One day, we'll run away. Just you and me and Jeremy. We'll run away into the forest and live there. We can collect plants and Jeremy can hunt. How does that sound?'
She stared at me in awe and slowly nodded. I hugged Madi and she choked on her tears.
'Shh, it's okay,' I soothed her, stroking her chestnut brown hair. She pulled away and looked into my stormy grey eyes, the same color as hers.
'But what about dad?'
I sigh. 'Before mother died, she realized how he was treating us. If mother could see us run away, she'd know it'd be the best for us.'
She nodded and pulled out something from the dress in her pocket.
'This is for you.' She went on her tiptoes and put a flower crown on my head. 'Happy birthday, Merida!'
