Chapter 11

Aiden

Then

I panicked.

“EDGAR! COME HELP ME! MARA’S FAINTED. WHAT DO I DO? EDGAR” I screamed, making half the people left inside the warehouse turn to look at me, their eyes wide. I didn’t give a fuck about their reactions. Mara was limp in my arms, a feeling I knew all too well.

I saw Edgar’s tall frame coming towards me, his face full of worry as he saw Mara’s unconscious body draped over me.

“MOVE! WE’VE GOT A DYING BABY SQUIRREL! MOVE! NOW!” Edgar pushed and screamed his way through the crowd, me carrying her in my arms. What happened? Why would she faint like this?

How stupid can I get? All of this was my fault.

We walked out into the grass, straight for my truck. I hauled her over the back of my pickup truck, pulling half her body on top of mine, holding her face in my hands.

“What happened, man?”

“I swear I don’t know. Edgar, she was just walking with me, and I felt her shake and then she just blacked out cold. I don’t know. Please help me.” I said, my voice hoarse. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

“Let’s go to the hospital. If she was shaking like you said, I doubt she just passed out. There must be something wrong with her.” My other band mate, Liam, walked towards us, already telling us what to do from across the warehouse, knowing what had happened. I quietly thanked the heavens for Liam- he was an intern at the hospital, he would know what to do.

“Start up the car, then,” I said, nodding at Edgar. He hopped right on with Liam in the passenger seat, me strewn across the back with Mara.

We got to the hospital within ten minutes flat, and I thanked the universe again for Edgar’s driving abilities.

They ran in, asking for someone to help, as I carried Mara into the emergency room.

I heard a nurse whisper to another, “Not again.” I looked at her, and she turned her head down. What was this all about?

We got help relatively quickly and I sat down outside, worrying.

After what seemed like ages, one of the doctors came out. I stood up, running a hand over my hair. I’d told my band mates to wait outside. I felt that if Mara would want anyone to know what was wrong first, it would be me.

“What is it? Is she all right? Is she awake yet?” I asked, feeling like Mara did earlier today, sounding like her, scared.

“She’s doing well. She had a small asthma attack, and her body just shut down. She’s awake now.” The doctor said dismissively, a funny look on his face.

I cut straight to the point. “What is it? The nurses seem familiar with her.”

“Well, that’s because they are. Mara suffers from asthma, and she faints every once in a while. She comes here ever since she was first diagnosed. She has these black outs sometimes, but she’ll be fine. Who are you? Her friend?” he asked, while my eyes became saucers, my mouth hanging wide open.

“I- I’m Aiden. I’m her friend. She was with me when she, um, blacked out.” I said awkwardly.

“So. Can I go in?”

“Are there any family members present?” he asked, his voice snobby.

“No. I brought her here. Thanks.” I snapped. I walked quickly to the emergency room section, asking for her.

“Room 143.” I heard a nurse say.

“Thanks.”

I hurried up, opening the door to reveal a quiet Mara, her face disgruntled, her hair a wild mess.

“You did not tell me about this.” I snapped at her before she could even say a word.

“Not many people know.” She snapped right back at me. I almost smiled at her, she seemed unfazed and completely healthy right after her black out, even though she was too pale for my liking under the room lights.

“I should know. If I had known, I would’ve been careful.”

“But you didn’t. It’s fine. It wasn’t your fault.”

“It was. Fuck it was. You need to say things like these.”

“How did you want me to tell you? ‘Oh, Aiden, by the way. I can’t do certain things, I have asthma, I should inform you’?” She said, her tone sarcastic.

“YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME. I WOULD’VE DONE THINGS DIFFERENTLY.” I was screaming now.

“DONE WHAT DIFFERENTLY, AIDEN? I HAD FUN. YOU HAD FUN. PERIOD. I’M FINE.” She screamed right back at me.

“BUT YOU’RE NOT. YOU’RE IN A HOSPITAL BED. MARA, YOU ARE IN A HOSPITAL BED.”

“I WON’T BE FOR LONG, AIDEN. I’M OKAY.”

“BUT YOU WEREN’T. YOU FAINTED ON ME, OKAY? I HAVEN’T FELT THIS AFRAID SINCE-”

I cut myself off, my throat starting to burn, my words choking me. The last time I’d felt this afraid, I’d lost it, and I couldn’t lose it again.

“Since when?” She asked me quietly, big green eyes staring at me.

“Since a long time ago.” I replied, my voice hoarse again. I walked slowly to sit on a chair next to her bed.

“When was ‘a long time ago’?” She asked, pressing it.

“Don’t push it.”

“Fine.” She crossed her arms over her chest, staring at the wall. I sighed.

“I’m sorry.” I said, looking down at her hands.

“It’s fine.” She huffed at me.

I laughed, and turned to look at her. She was already looking at me, her eyes wide. I loved her eyes. They were so green.

“What?” she asked me.

“What do you mean what?” I asked back.

“You were staring at me with this look on your face. Is there something in my face?” she asked, her hands raised up, going to touch her face.

I held them back to stop her, catching my fingers with hers, coming closer.

The heart monitor’s regular beep started beeping way more frequently than it was before. I grinned in realization as her cheeks turned a bright, beautiful shade of red, her eyes looking at anything else but me.

I pulled up one of my hands to reach her chin, but she slid her face away sneakily. I laughed.

“Come oooooonnnnnnnn,” I whined, pressing my nose against her cheek, nudging her, willing her to look at me.

“You know. And you act like you don’t know.” She breathed.

“I do know. And you act like you don’t feel anything.” I whispered.

“I don’t-”

“Oh, please shut up,” I snapped, pressing my lips to hers again.

She laughed, and I felt her fingers on my hair.
