NOTE: FIC HAS SINCE BEEN REMOVED FROM WATTPADMy honorable mention is the oneshot "Lost Tale of Sara" by VanillaWind. It was, thematically, a good read, but was held back by some pacing and formatting issues.
This story explores the idea of poaching—illegally hunting animals. Taking place in the early twentieth century, the book focuses on an antagonistic group pushing Swablu and Altaria to extinction in a hunt for their valuable, cloud-like fur. A young girl finds and saves a Swablu, which quickly makes her realize she needs to help the endangered species.
The plot pulled me in quickly. Hunting, and gun laws in general, is a controversial topic—one that is not written about enough. Not only did this book portray the inhumane traits of the hunters, it spread awareness on the topic as well. Being willing to bring attention to this topic hooked me.
The biggest flaw in the one-shot is the death of Sara. It was rushed and unrealistic, which dragged the story down significantly. Beyond that, and simple spelling and verb tense errors, I really loved the story.
The story is in need of revision, but it is a good read as it is. The author truly shined her light through this one-shot, and I'd love to see how far she's come by this time, next year.
