Chapter 5
"Okay, to be really candid, I cannot believe you totally even right now. I mean, don't you think so? Wow, actually I'm the princess of Senalia. Turns out I have magical powers. I have tons of questions that are gaps in this stupid fact," I said, words running out of my mouth, like I wasn't talking with my own lips.
"Go ahead and ask, princess," said Anna, smiling.
"How can Jack- okay, Magnus remember his duty and all? He was a baby still last time when he kind of 'transformed'," I said, narrowing my eyes accusingly.
"It's related to your parents, miss," said Jack- no, Magnus, bowing his head still, scratching the floor with his fingernails. "They were two young people who wanted a baby. We found out that they were infertile, gentle, and nice people. All those memories you have with them till the time you were ten years old, is all created by us."
His words just rammed into my heart, and my head went cold, suddenly the surrounding feeling hot, despite the gale. "Excuse me? I think you're speaking French. Created memory till the age I was ten. Impossible."
"The memory you have with me, your parents from ten years old is real. Now we are 'sixteen'. For six years, the memory was natural, true. Before that, it was all created artificially. I'm so sorry about it, miss. We couldn't afford to lose too much time. Senalia was already in danger-" Magnus began, but I cut him with a glare.
"Shut up. You know what? I don't want to hear about this. This is all rubbish. You're playing a prank on me. This isn't April yet, guys," I said weakly, half wanting them to say 'Surprise!'
Instead, they all forlornly looked at me, repetenace carved doggedly onto their countenaces as they kept their silence.
"Created memory," I murmured, shaking my head. "Wow."
"If you still don't believe us, we can show you your true hair colour as well," said Terrence. "Anna, do you have your phone with you? We can use that as a mirror. Magnus, hold it up in front of her and let it change."
Magnus smiled stiffly at me, as he brought Anna's phone towards my face, letting my reflection show on the sleek black screen. "If you'd allow me, I'll touch your hair for a while."
I hated how he was so respectful now- but I had no choice. I nodded, still glaring at him slightly, as his fingers brushed against my hair, stroking it. Hoping that they were going to laugh at me for falling into a trick, I watched intently.
Shock befell on me for the sickeningly umpteenth time of the day, as I saw the streaks of my hair, the roots, whitening. My hair, which I loved because I thought it was a natural blond, turning snow-white. It was slow, spreading as if a drop of paint dripped onto a canvas was spreading across slowly.
Nobody uttered a single utterance, as I watched my fully transformed hair, white as snow, pure and tumbling down my shoulders in Anna's screen. Magnus put the phone down, not speaking as well.
"What am I supposed to do now? There are so many things that I should absorb. First, my parents are actually infertile, innocent humans who didn't give birth to me. Secondly, I am an underwater kingdom called Senalia's princess, and I have to rescue the people who are in danger because of chimeras. Thirdly, Jack is Magnus, and he is my bodyguard. Geez, seriously?"
I was sarcastic, but I only realized that I was crying when I'd finished, something wetting my face. I wiped it away quickly with my sleeves, sniffing like a child.
"This is crazy," I whispered harshly, covering my face with my two hands as I shook my head like a rag doll, sighing. "Crazy."
I flinched, when I saw a bunch of white fall down my shoulders when I bent, instead of a blond bunch that I was used to.
"Do you feel giddy or anything, miss?" questioned Terrence, worry lacing his voice.
It felt extremely odd that he was calling me that instead of the usual fond way of calling my name. It was the most awkward and angriest that Magnus was so respectful, not a single trace of friendliness that we've shared in his tone as he spoke with so much cautiousness.
"Another...question," I managed to croak, facing them. "You said I have some kind of powers."
"Actually, if you want to be mathetical, you have two powers. One is something that the royalty all have; you can read people's minds. Every royalty can do it. Your father, and your late mother. Your brother, too."
"My brother?"
Anna looked quite uncomfortable as she continued what her husband was saying. "Yes, your brother. I don't think you'd quite like your brother- at first, because you don't like him so much due to the thing he teaches."
"Is it Norman Child, the one whose grades crawl the ground?" I burst out, incredulously. " Norman?"
"No. He should have arrived by now-"
"I'm here, Anna."
In the shadows appeared a man whom I could have recognized anywhere, making me do my dreadful ball-catching and stay back after school for practice: our P.E. teacher, Mr. Owens. He waved sheepishly from the shadows, smiling benignly. "Hello, younger sister."
I swear, I could have fainted on the spot.
"Mr. Owens?!"
