My mom used to tell me about what the world would be like without Enders. It would terrify me. She said that without the orange-eyed people, we would never get out of this horrible, corrupted world.

On those days, Mother would come in, sit on the edge of my bed, and tell me about the amazing people. She said that Father was an Ender. He had the power to breathe underwater.

I would always ask where he was because I've never seen him before.

She would look at me and smile balefully, looking deeply into my big, green eyes with her dark gray ones.

" He was caught. He was caught when they had an eye check at his work. He worked at the lumber mill like all of the other men. He said goodbye, kissed me, bent down and gave you a hug, then left. I never saw him again after that, Nikki."
