Chapter 9

When I wake up the floor is cold, making me cold in my thin clothes. I sit up, blinking. The walls and floor around me are cushioned with pale yellow pads, making the room look like one of those crazy person jail cell. The room is harshly lit, making me squint.

Where is the door? It's all wall. I see a red splotch on the wall and look over to investigate.

Sao squats in the corner looking at me, his large forearms balanced on his knees. I look him up and down, liking the way his eyes return my gaze.

"You look cute when you sleep, Nikki," he says, his voice raspy, and I realize what must've woken me up. Saos eyes were rimmed with red, as if he'd been crying. I try not to look like I noticed, letting him keep his dignity, even though I want to know why. He looks up at me, and I know why instantly.

"You know, it's not your fault. I was the one who-"

The wall opens and the army people run in, guns aimed at our chests. Dedrick Sandstone walks in and looks at us, his arms crossed across his chest. He wears a black vest and black sweats underneath. While I sit here freezing in a t-shirt and skinny jeans, he's all toasty and warm. I hope he burns up into little tiny smithereens.

"Sit over there with your friend, Nikki," he commands. I look at him squarely and stand up suddenly, making the soldiers tense up. So they under the control of Dedrick, he gives the commands. Great.

I go back and sit by Sao, reaching for his hand as I get comfortable. He stretches out his legs, making a little more room for me. I look up at Dedrick and raise my eyebrows, wondering why he's here.

"I have a little surprise for you. We have some siblings that just so happen to not have a room, so they are to bunk with you two. And we've brought you some clothes."

He grabs a small, black Swiss Mountain backpack from a soldier and tosses it to us. It bounces off the floor and I glance at it before looking back up at him.

"Here's the twins. Wait here, nicely, while I go fetch them." He snorts and says under his breath, "Like they have a choice. Hmph." He disappears for a minute or two and comes back with another mini army for the twins. He shoves the two of them into our room as the armies run out, automatically closing the wall.
