I hear voices and decide to keep my eyes closed so that they won't go away. I listen intently, knowing that this might yield to some facts about why I'm here and what these evil people are going to do to me.

"She has one of the highest scores in the brain simulant tests that we've ever had in this entire system. When we have someone take the test, we look at the brain waves, and if they are going up and down a lot, that means that the brain of the subject is working hard. Nikki, well, she is something special. Her brain hardly worked at all during the test, proving that she is an Ender, she doesn't have the Eyes yet. What I think is that her brain knows that it will put her in danger by showing the orange, and so it has decided that, without Nikki having the slightest notion, to not reveal the eyes. On its own!"

The man speaking seems to jump up and down next to me, making me shiver, and of course, he notices. "She's awake. Her brain waves spiked. I have a good feeling about this one, Jerome."

I feel as if I'm one of those pieces of crap that you flush, like, a billion times and it just keeps swirling around near the hole of the  toilet and never goes down. My arm hurts like nobody's business, my leg feels numb, and my head hurts like that turd I was talking about earlier. So sad. When I open my eyes, the white in the room blinds me. Ow. This may just be the worst day of my life.

The man next to me stands and looks me up and down. I realize that I'm standing with my back against an upright table/ bed. The man is darker, with a thatch of jet black hair slopped upon his head. Even though my table thing is pretty low to the ground, I'm still taller than this man.

I squinch my eyes at him, examining him as he does the same to me. He narrows his eyes, watches me, and writes something down on the clipboard he holds in front of his impeccable white lab coat. I can't wait any longer. I break the silence.

"Okay, you win. Who are you?" I ask, trying to be as rude as possible. These people don't deserve my kindness.

" I'm Jerome Vaschnoks. We'll try better to be nice to you, Nikki, but you don't make it very easy," Jerome says simply, writing down some more who knows what things on his clipboard.

Wait. Hold up. Did he just read my mind?  No, he can't read minds, can he? I mean, he just took what I was thinking and answered it. How in the-. Why is he smiling?

" I'm not the one reading minds, Nikki Adverdale. The machine is reading your mind and telling me what you're little brain in there is up to." He smirks, and his buddy chimes in.

" Actually, as I was saying earlier, Jerome, Nikki here is something special. Her brain is anything but little. It may just be one of the smartest-"

          "Shut up, Marcus."

          "Well, I was talking-"

          "I was talking first."

" BUT YOU HAD ENOUGH TIME! AND THE BOSS SAID TO SHARE OUR TIME WITH THIS LITTLE ARTIFACT OF HIS!"

"He said to get something out of this experience. I say that we dissect this girl here and-"

The door is slammed open, making me flinch against the velcro straps binding me to this backboard. Dedrick Sandstone bursts into the room and starts yelling at the men. I , on the other hand,  am stabbed in the leg again by Sandstone and everything goes black.
