I look down at him, thinking he's crazy, when I realize that he might be right. For once. I think back to when that jumpy man said that my brain was one of an Ender and that I hadn't gotten the eyes yet. I feel proud as I search his face, the utter astonishment shining through. He looks me up and down, and then looks back up because there is silence.
The soldiers walk back and stand against the wall. Dedrick leans on the doorway and looks at us evenly, as we sit next to each other and hold hands. He walks over to the dome and asks one of the soldiers for his gun. Dedrick grabs the gun cooly and taps the surface of our dome with it, making it shimmer and dance. He decides that it's safe enough to touch and rapps on the surface of the force field with his knuckles.
"Can you hear me? Nikki? Sao?" He looks at us through the glass like substance, raising his eyebrows to emphasize his question.
We look at each other, and nod in Dedrick's direction. Sao rubs my knuckles, his other hand sitting on my knee protectively.
"You can undo this," he paused, thinking of a word,"thing and we can escort you two to your cell peacefully or you can do it the hard way."
Sao pipes up, mocking his "Can you hear me? Dedrick? SWAT team?" He raises his eyebrows and looks at me incredulously.
Dedrick stops rubbing my force field and looks down at us. He glares at us, Sao especially. He nods slightly and starts to rub our dome again.
I think he's jealous. My force field is too awesome for him to handle. I look over at Sao and smile. Then I see that he has a backpack on. When did he have time to grab a backpack? How did they let him keep it? We could live in here if there's food in there. Where did he-
I st- stole it. N- No f- food.
A voice breaks into my head and my concentration fails. The force field dissipates, sending a wave of nausea my way. I bend over and groan. Hands grab my arms roughly. I look over at Sao and see him laying on the ground, hands over his ears. The soldiers, or whoever is dragging me, pull me towards the doorway. I'm too dizzy to give a fight so all I do is concentrate on Sao.
It takes four men to pick him up, his groans fill my ears. A shrill noise joins his moans, making the pain in my temples increase by a ten-fold.
He has healing. Telepathy. And now mind reading. Great. Now I can't think alone. Another wave of pain enters my head, making my vision blur.
I'm tossed into a room, the floor warm and soft. I hear a thud on the floor next to me and see the glint of Saos golden hair.
Slee- Sleep, Nik- Nikki.
Sao stammers into my head. That seems like a good idea. Maybe I should. I do.
